I also hope Vegas will support this, I would hate to see Sony support only Sony products. HDV is nice and all but if other companies come up with something better I hope Sony won't ignore them.
Nat - Vegas is a Format Agnostic NLE (always has been from what I've known - probably always will be). The question is simply will they make it so that the bitrate will be supported - I think :)
As far as I know - you can't add the codec to vegas right now - I'm hoping to see this happen in V6. I'm kinda grounded in thin air here so if I'm wrong - ABSOLUTELY, please tell me if I'm wrong.
As far as I know you can make the Vegas frame rate whatever you please, just be careful, I had the cursor whizz right off the monitor trying to handle 5000 fps once, found the thing embedded in the office wall, missed the cat by inches.
Bob.
Being able to set frame rates, etc. is nice, but full on support of the DVCPRO codecs would be huge. I have been a rabid Vegas fan for years and love to use it/pimp it/support it, but if this new panny does what it says it does, then HDV is really not an option if they're roughly the same price point. And thus, Vegas becomes a non option... and I'd hate to have to go MAC/FCP after all these years of telling people that I can edit on a PC with just as good of results thanks to Vegas...
I do know that AVID has a codec for DVCPRO HD (it's called something else that I can't remember just now) for PC's, and it's the sort of thing you can download and install w/o AVID, etc. But that doesn't necissarily mean that Vegas will use/support it...
This cam will be no where near the same Price point as the Z1 - I can't imagine it would.
The HVX-200 is (from what I have heard) going to be strictly tapeless (could be wrong - but tapes would only be able to record DVCPRO/25 - Jan has said that it wouldn't make sense to put a full size DVCPRO sized tape in the body, so that means no HD on tape for sure) and use only P2 cards for recording (have to spend about 4-5K to get a usefull one right now - Usfull being something that could record 8-10 minutes of High res footage, if that). P2 cards will go down in price over time, and that will be great - but right now that hvx is definately not going to be in the price range of your non-super human or business operator with a need to go HD.
The Z1 is NTSC/PAL - can record 1080i HD for a good long hour at a time - and for only about 18 dollars (at the most) a tape - Mind you that I am full gung ho for this HVX to get out there and start raising the bar and making everyone else do the same thing - and then causing the overall price of them to start to drop.
I am not a diehard anything - definately am not a servent to any brandname - this is just my take
Never the less - I still think that it's probably gonna be close to 10K but not more (as Panasonic has stated that it will not be more than 10K), and then another 4-5K for just a single card.
Rumors abound, but the most promising ones claim 7-8 gig p2 cards with the announcement and the possibility of direct to hard drive recording. Also heard there might be a 4 gig card included with the camera. That would be around 10-11 minutes of 720p24 footage. If you shoot on film, it wouldn't be much of a change at all. But if you're industrial then hard drive options are REALLY high on your wish list.
