New Forum? - "Made in Vegas"

Just food for thought:

As the recent "Sony Forum Vote Either Y or N ONLY - please no oppinions" thread clearly shows, members want a place to post links to their work.

And as the recent "Pro Life Abortion VIDEO" post clearly shows, if the topic and video itself are on a subject likely to raise emotions, then tempers flare, challenges are made and the thread (and forumn overall) degenerates. As someone mentioned, we take pride in the forum, but its stated purpose and its informative value is dimminshed with glaring distractions like this

Perhaps the solution is to create a "Made in Vegas" forum expressly for the posting of links to members videos. This is how it is at the Steinberg Nuendo forum...

http://forum.nuendo.com

...and it is very effective in giving the members a place to show off their work and solict opinions, without clogging up the User's Forum which is dedicated to members' questions and answers ABOUT USING THE SOFTWARE. Makes searching the forum for relevant posts easier too.

Just a thought...

Steve

Don't forget about Chienworks which has been so graciously maintaining a site for Vegas users for some time now...

Yup...I think Kelly's site is what's needed to be referred to here. We could ask Sony for new forums til the cows come home but the fact remains that there will always be trolls or unpleasant people, and difficult subjects for folks to deal with. Just scroll back and look at the forums in late October and early November, they are filled with nastiness about the elections. Should Sony have given us an Elections Forum?
A suggestion is to directly notify Sony when a thread starts to get out of whack, rather than adding gas to the fire. Tempting to toss that fuel on there, I've done it several times myself but have been trying to avoid it for the past several months. It doesn't curb the bad behavior, but I think that if Sony locks enough threads down, it will either train folks to behave a little better, or at least provide a means of consistently identifying the offenders and eventually giving them the boot. As long as the videos being linked to, whether on a personal site or on Kelly's site are not over the line of what's acceptable by general society or by this community, personally I have no problem with links here to them. Even if I disagree with what is presented or portrayed in those vids. Healthy discourse, sharing of vids and information is what this forum is for. It only gets bad when people take it to the level of name-calling or denigration of each other. And at that point, most of us are embarrassed for the entire community, or so I suspect.

I won't mind seeing something like Acidplanet for Vegas video . I also don't think links to ones personal video in this forum should be resticted . I know it could get out of hand but the alternative of no member being able to link anything would be far worse. I have benefitted greatly from other members links .

Even thought it sounds like a good idea... NO! I don't need another forum to paruse through every day. :)

I haven't looked at that thread, but I'm guessing it stirred up some things. I didn't view it because I feel strongly on the subject & KNEW I'd get into fights. So, I avoided it. (which coulnd't of been done w/o a good descriptive subject title)

If people who make threads properly named them so that people who would get pissed could choose to avoid them, then things woud be easier. It would also be easier if people started to get pissed about anything they see (vids, advertisiments, foul language, etc) would just leave the thread, or if it's really bad (one time a member had swear words in their subject), report to sony. I don't see a point in fighting with people I've never met. :)

I would put in a vote first for Kellys site as it already exists and is directly for Vegas. That to me is somewhat of a no brainer.

Next I would put in a vote for the DMN forums. They added a great feature a while back that allows for posting of clips in the actual post. Not only in the Vegas forums but also in all of them. So say you have a demo reel - you can post it in the demo reel thread and if you have an Magic Bullet clip you could post it in that forum, and if a clip was done in Vegas you could post it there. The thing is that the clip is actually viewable from within the thread. Sad thing is that no one seems to use this feature really.

Keep in mind that the recent thread here asking for a simple "Y" or "N" answer about clips is not an official thread by Sony. Also this *is* a Sony run forum and they make the rules so if they want to say that we can not post any link to any video, done in Vegas or not, they can. FWIW I did not post a "Y" or "N" in that thread because it is not that clear cut - these forums have rules and any clips posted should really follow the same rules. Should I be able to post any sort of clip, provided it was done in Vegas, and I clearly state the subject matter? IMO as long as it stays in the already set forum guidlines. However if I cut together, say, an advertising piece for a product/person/place should I post that link just because I clearly say "This is an advertisment"? Well the forum rules say outright you can not post an advertisment. How about I post a clip that is a personal attack on another member of this forum as long as I clearly say "This is a personal attack on a member of this forum"? One is not allowed to make a post doing that, so why should I be able to psot a link to a clip that does that? So where does one draw the line? you can't simply give a "Y" or "N" reply here...and I am speaking about *here* only. Read the forum rules, think about the question being asked.

It is nice to have the ability to ask for opinions here and post a link asking for feedback, but in a way that is what Kelly's site is for - putting a clip up and letting people give feedback. We can post here saying there is a post over there just the same as we can post a link here - so I guess it just boils down to a more basic question - should Sony make several new forums for sub topics - such as "mixed in Vegas" "Edited with Vegas" "Audio plug-ins for Vegas" "Video plug-ins for Vegas" "Wish list for Vegas" "Technical quetions about Vegas" "Vegas tips" and now lets not forget all of the above for Sound Forge, Acid, DVD-A and whatever else. And than have another complete forum just called "Whatever" that would be for any off topic (ie - not directly Sony product related) subject. And that would include topics like cameras, mixing boards, speakers, formats, film making tips as well as topics about other sites, film reviews, distribution, and so on.

Or if the tone that these forums have taken in recent months continues the question might become "Should SONY even host their own forum(s) anymore or should it become just a basic "tech help / FAQ" forum."

*EDIT* - fixed some spelling.

True, I didn't mean to step on the toes of others already doing this. Also, I did not suggest Sony actually host clips, nor did I suggest a Sony start a forum for every occasion. In fact, the election posts are a perfect example of one type of posting that would be eliminated from this forum.

If Sony were to relegate links to clips and OT posts to a single destination -- a Media Lounge or some such, this forum would be able to focus on issues and tips regarding the using the software at hand (and make searching a heck of a lot easier). It works extremely well over at Nuendo - rarely a flame or OT to push the legit questions off the page...

As I said, just a thought and members have spoken...

Cheers,

Steve
