new hard drive -- sony programs won't run

tbobpage wrote on 7/26/2006, 9:41 PM
Good evening --

Just upgraded to a bigger hard drive. Ghosted the old drive to the new (well, not Norton, Maxblast, actually, but the same idea AFAIK), and everytihng works great except for Sony's programs I own -- Vegas 6, DVDA 3, soundforge 9, CDA 5.2, all with the same error:

"This application is not properly installed. Please reinstall this software in order to continue"

Tried searching the old posts and no solutions -- other than a full ininstall and reinstall. This will take hours. Anybody know how to get around having to start from scratch? Surely there's a registry edit or something? All programs are on the D drive and were originally installed as such.

thanks,

Todd

I don't have your specific experience, but I just used Ghost on one of my PC's to replace a failing boot drive. Everything worked except one program that required re-registration.

Try re-installing your Sony apps.

i don't know why it will take HOURS. Maybe 1 hour, tops. Just use the updates you backed up from the 'net & use the online reg. Bing, done!

I recently moved to a new computer after my old motherboard exploded. I didn't bother with ghost at all 'cause i wanted a fresh start. I reinstalled Vegas, DVDA, Sound Forge, ACID, and Noise Reduction and registered/activated them all in about 10 or 15 minutes.

Make sure you have .net 2.0 installed or Ghost won't work correctly.
Then check the websites for updates for Ghost and for critical updates for .net 2.0 My guru buddy just got though wringing this out on his machines.

tbobpage, I went through the exact scenario as you and had to re-install and re-register. I presume this is because the activation key is tied to the serial number of the hard drive. Even if you knew where it was hidden in the registry, it is incredibly unlikely that you could find out the algorithm for key generation.

In any case, I think it took me less than an hour to install Vegas + DVD Architect again. My only concern is that I think I may have used up one of the three Vegas "licenses" in this process.

have no fear, you can install Sony Media Software products as many times as you want on your PC's. :)When you get the error about to many installs (and I haven't on install ~15) you just call tech suppt. & they reset it. :)

Thanks all for your replies. The reason I was going on about "hours" was that I had done a search on the error and one guy had a similar issue and did a reinstall and it didn't work so then he had to do a complete uninstall, remove media manager, all kinds of stuff, and THAT would have taken a long time.

If I can get by with just reinstalling -- and I'm assuming I can do this over the current installation, then that's not so bad --

thanks again for all the advice!

I do not think you have to re-install, just re-register. I just replaced my C: drive having made a clone copy using a tool supplied by the hard disk manufacturer. All the Sony apps wanted re-registration which was easily achieved. My Finale was a bit more complicated but that worked out as well.

Thanks HappyFriar, I was holding off installing V on one of my computers because I am going to upgrade to larger drive in about 3 months. I wish I would have known about the flexibility of the installation count, as I really could have made use of the machine in question to reduce my rendering times.

Tor --

So did Vegas startup for you then ask for registration? I can't even get mine to start loading so I'm not sure if I can even try to re-register them....... the error message pops up right when I hit run.....

Like the original poster, I upgraded to a new hard drive a few months ago and encountered the error message "This application is not properly installed. Please reinstall this software in order to continue." I reinstalled the applications at that time, but discovered that the online registration no longer worked. I tried phoning but the support lines must have been on vacation. My e-mail request for help was answered within a couple of days, but I no longer had the spare time to follow through.

Finally now in the middle of the summer I've found a few moments to address the problem. Yesterday morning I reinstalled my Sonic Foundry programs (Vegas Video 3, Sound Forge 6, ACID Pro 3 and Batch Converter 5). When I tried using the "Registration Over the Phone" option, I reached a voice-mail which advised me to download the Online Registration Repair Tool patch. I downloaded and installed the patch and registered all my programs.

But that was not the end of my problems.

Now when I try to start any of the programs I get an error message on top of the splash screen saying "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." Under the Details Button it says "VEGAS30 caused an invalid page fault in module MP3PLUG.DLL".

After doing basic troubleshooting, I e-mailed Sony Support. That was yesterday. (A previous poster said, "i don't know why it will take HOURS. Maybe 1 hour, tops. Just use the updates you backed up from the 'net & use the online reg. Bing, done!" I just wish! How long can it take? A day and a half and counting. A few months, even.)

While I wait for a response from Sony Support: Do you know of a workaround for this problem?
