New laptop recommendations?

RgVideo wrote on 8/15/2023, 4:05 PM

I've decided it's time to upgrade my 9-year-old Toshiba laptop (with ii5 processor) to one with faster rendering. Have been using MSP16 with it.  Any suggestions for a current 14” laptop to make YouTube and Instagram videos with Vegas Edit 20?  Most of them will probably be in the 30 second to 5 minute range. Willing to spend up to $1,500.

Thanks,

Ralph

Big topic with lots of opinions. 14" seems small to me, but that's my "eyes". Anyway, start by looking at the requirements for Vegas Video below and then apply those (or better) to a new computer that has the features you want and the price range you can afford. You can't "future proof" the technology or laptop, but you may get more use out of it for a bit longer.

I absolutely LOVE my Asus Zenbook Pro Duo, it has 2 screens, so I can put my timeline down on the bottom screen and get a full screen HDR preview on the top 4K OLED screen. Perfect for color grading.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

@fr0stye Thanks it's on my list. Not sure I would like the 2nd screen for other than video use, though.

It also comes with a stylus, so I use it to draw in photoshop, in Lightroom, you can put all the images in the project you're working on on the second screen, so you can easily import multiple photos, edit them on the top screen, then use the bottom touch screen (both are touch) to easily select the next photo you want to work on. I also use it in Resolume to put my Advanced output menu on the bottom screen when I'm projection mapping, so I can keep the resolume menu on the top and still trigger clips and effects with it. Or sometimes I just use it to watch TV/youtube while working on the top screen.

Also, the mouse trackpad turns into an illuminated num pad at the press of a button.
