New MC Mpeg / DVCPro

I doubt that Sofo/Sony will respond to this as to *if* it will be included in an update because the past dictates a 'no comment' response. But I was reading this and thought is was interesting. As the 4.0e release did nothing but change a logo it is too bad this wasn't included - I like the MPEG preview to Mini-DV devices via firewire and wonder if the HD version allows for this type of preview as well.

======
FROM THE MAIN CONCEPT SITE

In December we will release plug-ins for Adobe Premiere 6.5 and Premiere Pro allowing fast, native MPEG editing.

Features include:

~Capture module allowing realtime capture to MPEG from analog and DV devices.
~Sony MICROMV™ support including capture, direct editing and output back to the camcorder.
~FireWire output for preview on DV devices while editing and scrubbing.
~Smart rendering - only changed frames are recompressed.
~Requantizing - transcoding from one MPEG format to another (for example, from MICROMV to DVD) without re-encoding.
~Mixed DV/MPEG support - mix and match material from both formats in any project.
~Speed optimizations allowing realtime editing of DVD material on an Intel® Pentium® 4 system.

The Plug-ins will be available in a basic version and an HD version.
===============

Also of intrest and just wondering if it was compatable with VV - seems like it might be, but than would one have to unchck the "ignore third party dv codecs" option?

=============
The MainConcept DVCPro 25/50 DV Codec is our new product for our amateur and professional customers working with high end Video. DVCPRO50 delivers considerably higher picture quality since it uses less compression than DV. The Codec comes with a full-featured DirectShow filter. It is compatible with any program which supports the standard DirectShow interface.

Technical Specifications:

DVCPro 25: 4:1:1 Color Space, 8 Bit Quantization, data reduction of 5:1, data rate of 25 Mbit/s

DVCPro 50: 4:2:2 Color Space, 8 Bit Quantization, data reduction of 5:1, data rate of 50 MBit/s

Filmy, I capture footage at work with a Matrox RT2500 & the Matrox DVCPro25 codec. It works great in Vegas, and it's free (well, can't capture in Vegas). It also edits in the DVCPro codec, and if I render an unedited part it just copys the frames.

Also, isn't it nice to know that in Vegas you can use ANY video format in your timeline, WITH OUT needed a codec update? :) Also, we can preview via Firewire right out of the box. :) However, I would LOVE to see Vegas be able to combine mpeg files without re-encoding. But, that may be a MainConcept limitation (and one wonders how much Adobe paid them to be ahead of Vegas in the respect, huh?)

That wasn't so much the question as it was the idea of...well, a while back there was a thread about when/if there would be a new update for VV with the new MC Mpeg codec. If I remember it was because the new MC codec was better and "faster" and supported HT plus the MC site said there was an update available for the built in Premiere codec, but no mention of VV. The SoFo/Sony response was something along the lines of they update the codec in the normal updates. So my question was more along the lines of "Is this going to be part of the next 'normal' update?" Because an "update" was just put out, one that Sony said changed nothing at all except the logo. So it wasn't like I can't import/export MPEG (I can export Mpeg in Premiere 6.5 as well, could do it out of the box as well. Not sure about Avid Xpress however) now and need this update to do so. Just these added features sure would be nice...I think.

One of the things that really impressed me in the specs for this new MPEG codec was that it allows firewire out from MPEG - Vegas does not do this out of the box. Premiere doesn't either. And because they said an "HD" version available as well I am thinking "Wow, ok, so does this now mean you can do HD on the timeline, software only, and get a preview out via firewire? To a mini-DV firewire device no less?" (I know it doesn't mean you can output HD to Mini-DV for recording. Actually - wait - could you? If it is putting out a readable signal...hmmmm)

As for the DVC codec - you said "well, can't capture in Vegas..." and that is why I brought up that codec as well. If it links up to the system via DX could you actually capture in Vegas with it? And if so would it fall under the "ignore third party codecs" option? (And falling into that thought - the above MPEG codec also says it allows for real time MPEG capture - does that mean a software only HD capture from withing Vegas now as well?) (of course this is only thinking that these new items would go into Vegas)
