I had posted a few weeks back about upgrading my existing machine so that I can edit video and burn DVDs. I am now considering purchasing a new machine, instead. I can purchase a new HP Pavilion 500 with the following: 1.8 MHz Celeron (Pentium adds quite a bit to price), 256MB DDR SDRAM, 60GB 7200 rpm hard disk, DVD writer (nothing for 2nd bay), and Windows XP for about $800. Is this enough that I will be satisfied with video editing and DVD burning for a while? Is there anything that I'm missing that I should be adding? Thanks for reading!!

No, seriously ... That systems would leave mine standing. I have no problems with my pIII 550 & 128Mb memory & 60Gb hd. The only problem I seem to have is thatit takes years to do the final render.

Celerons aren't really recommended, I'd definitely reconsider that. There's a reason PIVs are more expensive. If you want power without the PIV price, go with an Athlon.

I'd agree with MyST, although AMD runs a bit hotter than a P4 but nothing to worry about. Is there any way you can use your old hd in new machine as 2nd hd - just hook it up as slave (or as master depending on what size it is). Having 2nd dedicated hd just helps to eliminate room for error a bit.

Another good reason for the second hard-drive (and this comes from TedH at SoFo, thanks by the way) is in case of a viral infection (the PC, not you) and you need to reformat your system drive, your hours or weeks of work are safe on the second drive.
Viruses(virii??) aside, it's still a good idea. I recently purchased a few loop libraries from SoFo, and with Ted's advice, I installed all my loops on my second drive. This took a couple hours to do. Well, guess what? My system drive decides to give up 2 days later. Fried. Nothing to do but send it back under warranty for exchange. BUT! At least all my loops are intact! I would've had to re-install about 4 Gigs worth of loops PLUS my apps if they were on one drive.
