New Script: Open Stills in Graphic Editor

wwaag wrote on 4/30/2016, 8:25 PM
For anyone interested, I've put together a new script "Open Stills in Graphic Editor". It's very similar to the script "Open in Graphic Editor" written some years ago with some notable exceptions. First, no more problems saving files after editing, including PSD files. Second, no more diappearing taskbar icons. And third, you can open camera Raw files in your editor, and after editing, save to a file format of your choice. The key difference between this and the earlier script is that Takes are added "after" editing is completed, not before, which explains why there isn't a problem saving files--Vegas doesn't yet have its handles on them. Back in Vegas after editing, there is a message box which can be closed with a mouse click or return key and at that point the takes are added. I have tested the script on Versions 9, 10, 12, and 13 of Vegas using Photoshop CC as the graphic editor--the only one I have--with a variety of formats including JPG, BMP, TIFF, PSD, GIF, PNG, and RW2 (Panasonic raw). For anyone who wants to use raw, you will have to download and install the Microsoft Camera Codecs package.

For those using PSD files with layers on different tracks, changes will be applied only to the track event containing the layer that was selected. In other words, the new take will be added to only that layer, leaving the remaining layers unchanged. So if you want to change two layers, you need to make two round trips to the editor. Alternatively, you could make changes to multiple layers, save and then replace the original file with the take, in this way applying changes to all layers.

If you're interested in trying the script, it can be found here, along with a png file suitable for a taskbar icon and also some notes on installation and use.

Many thanks to John Rofrano and Ed Troxel for their help with this script. I've also used code written by Vegasaur staff for restoring taskbar icons, although I don't think it's needed, but it's there anyway, just in case. You will have to make changes to the script identifying the filepath of your editor and also the type of format for saves when editing camera Raw files. These are explained in the notes. Comments and feedback are welcomed. If there are problems, send me a PM.

I've just completed an extension version of the script which also includes a settings GUI. Many thanks to Gary James. It can be downloaded here.

Well done Wayne. Here's some feedback.

Is it just too difficult or cumbersome to have a script to do the multi layer PSD behave itself? "Rosebud" has a separate User friendly Setup Script so a Script-Challenged User doesn't need to fumble through your script.

Did you ever discover just why the original, "Rosebud" OIGE wouldn't pipe RAWs to a graphics editor? I posted that request here in the Script forum.

Grazie

@Graham

Not sure exactly what you mean. At the moment, the script updates the selected layer without issue. Based on feedback on CC, I am looking into having an option to update all layers by replacing the original file with the new Take.

"Rosebud" has a separate User friendly Setup Script so a Script-Challenged User doesn't need to fumble through your script.

Copying the file path of your editor and pasting it into a single line (#24 to be exact) shouldn't be a real challenge. The script is already set to default to PNG as output from camera RAW files. Opening the script file in Notepad and changing PNG to JPG, for example seems pretty easy to me. A configuration GUI could easily be written, but would increase the complexity and future problems as seen in the "Rosebud OIGE" script.

Did you ever discover just why the original, "Rosebud" OIGE wouldn't pipe RAWs to a graphics editor?

No, and here's the problem. The OIGE is a "compiled" script (a dll) and not the original source code. AFAIK, there is no easy way to extract the source code, especially since much of the code is Vegas-specific. By running the script from the original code, it then becomes open to everyone to change and modify if needed in the future. Once the script is compiled, it is pretty much set in stone, unless the original source script can be found.

I just uploaded a new version of the script which should be useful to those using PSD files having multiple layers on different tracks. There are now three options on line 26. 1 - All files added as a Take (the same as before) 2 - Files added as a take except PSD files. The edited file now replaces the original file on the timeline so that all layers are updated. and 3 - All edited files replace the original file.

Oh man! Not working here. I'm not getting the my Corel PSPX8 to open the CR2 nor my Corel AfterShot Pro2, and this was precisely what I wanted to happen. It's gotta be something local to my machine, and not your script.

Checked paths and checked to see if both EXE Corels work, and they do.

Your Setup Script works very well. I have BOTH your Icons on my Toolbar.

I hate this stuff! Really, really hate this stuff . . . . .

Sorry Waggle, if you wanna see my Screen, via SKYPE, you're welcome to view what I am doing.

Arrggghhh.....

Wayne, just run the original OIGE and that works fine with JPGs, but it is still back to the option of trying to transport my CR2 Canon RAWs - that is STILL the issue and I was hoping that that would have been answered. Oh yeah that and the PSD Independent Layer "Layer" adjust.

There is something fundamental that you/we aren't addressing. JPGs work fine with the old OIGE - CR2 RAWs not. Your OIGE I can't even get my Graphics Editors to fire-up!

Well, Wayne's World, has many rooms . . . . OK, he has got me to be able to open RAWs - CR2 in my X8 s/w, but the round trip back to VP13 is knocking at another Room, for service.

I will say, Wayne is truly patient with me. I have NOOO idea why?

Thanks Wayne,
