Zero impact. Worry about feeding hungry children in Rangoon before worrying about how Vegas is impacted by an earnings statement. SMS is such a very small part of the overall whole, but with tremendous importance to the whole, it's simply not an issue.
Thank you Spot, that was the answer I was looking for. I would hate to see budget cut-backs on Vegas when it had nothing to do with the other Sony issues. YAY!!!
I agree with spot. That's like you having a low budget at home & considering cutting away the juice boxes for the kids lunch's before taknig out the stake dinners.
The electronics division is what has to worry. The PS3 & Wii are being released at the same time (same weekend), if the PS3 bombs compared to Wii sales the stockholders won't be happy (which, from the way it's looking, may happen pretty easily). the PS3 is already a profit loss for ~5 years, but if sales are real good for it in the first few months, the actual earnings could be higher (I'm expecting the lowered earnings just because they don't want to over-exagerate the worth, not like the marketing dept. does)
The first 500,000k PS3's are already sold out, so that's not a problem. It is the attach rate of games and Blu-ray movies to those consoles which is what will hurt or help Sony in the long run. They do have a lot riding on it though.
They are the number one movie studio this year (to date) so that's a bonus.
Well, again, I'm just glad to know Vegas won't take a blow for it. Lynx, are you sure about that number, 500,000k? I'm guessing you meant 500 k. I've read enough news from both sides to know things aren't going very well for many (but not all) of Sony's divisions. What I did not know was how it might effect the small Madison-based division.
500k PS3's seems like a lot but it's a small number. I belive the PS2 sells ~100k a month all over the world currently. No clue how many nintendo has to sell (but i also belive they're eigther making, or losing very little, profit from their next gen sales)
I'd say that the TV/Film division is doing resonably well this year. At least it seems so. I'd say this was the best year for movie goers in quite a long time, many good flicks released. So yeah, that is a plus. DVD sales & merchandising! :D
"small Madison-based division" got some extra ad and product "sales" for Vegas with Sony giving it away with proconsumer cameras for awhile. If feedback is strong from camera buyers, Sony may extend the deal.
Sony has been buying and leasing big internet connections and servers for the future of Sony-online. First, all PSP3 owners will have free internet gaming with PSP3 online games if you have a gaming disk,(MS Xbox online charges about $50). This online gaming just a small step, moving to media downloads and PSP3 user media file sharing,( sorry, no details available), and a lot more( relatived to BR movies online features). Don't be surprise if you hear google and Yahoo trying to workout a deal for additional media content (news...) for Sony online users. Maybe Apple will pay enought fees and connect itunes to the PSP3. Apple likes the ideal of the gaming community having access to itunes thru a centra provider.
The additional PSP3 media center features will hopefully increase the vegas user base, as Sony pushes HDV, PSP3 and BR as an integrated product line. The future is Wild!
Yeah meant 500k, the estimated shipment numbers for the PS3 to North America on Nov 17th. Between the preorders and the people that will camp out, you won't be able to find one by noon on the 17th.
Assuming they hit those numbers, could and probably will be worse. But as with all high end consoles, they lose money with each one sold and rely on the software to make it up. In this case, they have two revenue streams, Blu-ray movies and PS3 games.
