New Sony NEX-EA50UH

This new Sony Camera might be the dream camera a lot of people were waiting for - large sensor - a lot of features - shoulder design - around $4000.

Perhaps not quite as good an image as a FS100 but in the ball park. Coming in Oct. It's made onto my consideration list - I was about to jump for the FS100 and I might still - but now reconsidering - no rush.

I agree bigrock. It is about time someone took a DSLR sensor and put it into a form factor that addressed a lot of the shortcomings of using a DSLR for video. While I won't call it attractive, it certainly looks very practical, even compared to my EX1.

I was disappointed to see that this apparently has the same sensor as in the NEX-5N. Don't get me wrong, that camera produces some really nice images. It is just that I can't live with the moire/aliasing that these cameras have. Perhaps the software and/or hardware (perhaps an optical low pass filter?) in this new one will address this. Like you, I'll anxiously await the real world experiences on this one.

I really wish canon would follow suit on this idea and at this price point. With all the installed base of Canon glass, like mine, you'd think they would sell like hotcakes.

Yes there a lot of questions around the sensor that will take time to get answer - a low pass filter is a must to be taken seriously. I would have much rather seen the sensor from the FS100 (aka the monstrosity) in this camera - it would be a slam dunk. My only concerns at this point are the sensor moire and the silly loupe thing. Many bad reports about this being a joke on the FS100, anybody have anything good to say about. I was leaning to the FS100 but all the reports about bad build qualiity have swung the pendelum back to Panasonic AF100 or this new Sony. I'd really like to but the FS100 buy I need something that will last a decent amount of time.

We have the FS100 and will buy the 700.
For the money the build quality is OK, yeah the "loupe" thing is a joke, camera needs some blue pills to help there. There's still the issue of good glass and so far the cheapest zoom I can find comes in at $35K.

We also have the AF100. Nice effort but again not much to choose from in the way of optics even ignoring the cost factor.

We also have the C300 and I get to play with it from time to time. Nice effort but again, up against the optics problem. Ours gets used a lot with Canon stills lenses, both primes and zooms. The clicky iris thing is a huge put off for me.

All of the above cameras have a menu system that drives me up the wall as well.
Going back to my tried and trusted EX1 is a breath of fresh air. Soon I'll need something with more grunt for a show so I'll master our PMW-350.

Yesterday I shot something with the HXR-NX30 because I wanted the stabilization. Again bewildered by the arcane menu system, no time to really check it out properly. I got there in the end, probably more by good luck than anything and yes, that little projector was useful for showing the client and talent what the shot looked like and I didn't scare the natives with some massive amount of kit.

This seems to be the conumdrum. You want all the bells and whistles on external buttons not some menu silliness and you are talking small sensor. You want large sensor and you seem to lose a lot of functionality and usability. The Panasonic seems to be best compromise (not including the new Sony which is still has unknowns). I really like the image quality of FS100 but it seems to have been desgined as unfunctional as possible. My prime concern is image quality but I want to shoot with manual control with doing loopedy-loops. Maybe someone will bring out a better compromise in the next year - it's always next year - isn't it. Too bad you couldn't pry the sensor out of the FS100 and pound it into the AF100 wih a hammer - then you'd have perfection.

I am kinda of leaning heavily towards the FS700 right now despite the price. I did a little test of what you can do with just Vegas for slow motion, and it's just nowhere what you can reveal with the FS700. It really comes down to particle isolation frame to frame.
