New system and now choppy preview

Hi folks.

I recently built a new i7 based machine and Vegas Pro 11 is performing well under what my old system was able to do. Basically, no matter what level I set the video preview on, video playback becomes choppy over the course of 30 seconds to a minute. If I change the video preview setting, playback will suddenly become smooth again for a short period but eventually get choppy again.

My old system was a Quad core and had no problems playing back the project at the "Preview (Full)" level or even higher.

Here are the specs for the new system:
Windows 7 x64 (1 week old installation)
Intel Core i7 2600k
Intl DP67BG motherboard
8 gigs of Corsair RAM
EVGA Nvidia 560ti (306.23 driver. I also tried the previous driver version 301.XX)
OS drive is a OCZ Vertex 4 SSD.

Any help with this will be appreciated very much.

I just installed the 32-bit version and it runs perfectly fine.

I'm testing 2 projects right now. One is video imported from an iPone 4s and the other is video captured from a DV tape. The iPhone video project can't even load properly in the 64-bit version. Timeline thumbnails get corrupted, the peak files constantly get corrupted and video playback goes to a black screen frequently. In the 32-bit version everything works fine.

With my DV tape capture project the 64-bit version of VP11 keeps getting choppy playback with the preview. The 32-bit version works flawlessly.

What is the deal with the 64-bit version? Is it really that buggy or could something be not ideal with my system configuration? I have the latest drivers for all my components.

If your preview RAM settings are above 200-250, I would try setting them in that range for 8 gig memory configuration. And if it's a new build, make sure you have all Windows updates current. There have been a few in the last few weeks that have seemingly improved performance on my system.

And I have always found the 32 bit version much more stable, but I think you can get the 64 version usable on your system.

Edit: If you're using GPU acceleration, try something that sounds foolish - when I first installed the 64 bit version I found a similar degradation in playback rate - put a color corrector plug in or color curves plugin on the video track without changing any settings. Believe it or not, it stabilized playback. 1080 AVCHD played back forever at best/full. After a few months it became fine on its own. I assumed Windows updates had something to do with it.

Atom12,

Thank you for the reply. I appreciate it very much.

My OS is fully up to date.

My preview RAM was at the default of 500MB so I tried your 250MB suggestion and things played back smoothly in the 64-bit version. I was surprised by the results so I tried putting it back to 500MB to see what would happen and it continued to playback smoothly. --- I don't get it! ---- Last night it was a chop fest after 15 seconds. Tonight it works flawless. Perhaps simply rebooting the system took care of it. I should have tried that last night.

Thanks for the tip on the GPU trick. I will keep that in mind in the future.

I still can't open my iPhone project properly in the 64-bit version. The weird thing is I can import iPhone clips up to about the 45 minute mark and everything is okay. As soon as I add more clips beyond that point the project gets corrupted with green thumbnails, black screen playback and corrupted drawing of audio clips. I don't have this problem with the 32-bit version. Could this issue be a problem with codec and 64-bit Vegas? I have downloaded the latest version of Quicktime.

It's pretty aggravating the 64-bit version is running so poorly and Vegas 12 is just about to be released. I feel like I got ripped off by Sony and I don't think I will every purchase another software title from them again. I'll spend a little more time troubleshooting the problem but at some point I will have to move on or stick with the 32-bit version until I find a suitable 64-bit replacement.

Thanks again for you help!
