new system questions

hi everybody,
ive been out of the new chipset scene for a while and i have to build a new system this week for a client that works only in DV and wants all output back on DV tape. (up until this point, i worked strictly with SP Beta using Ifinish) So, with that in mind...

i dont care about overclocking. Stability, stability, stability...thats all i care about.

i see that intel makes the 845E chipset as well as the 850 (850 uses rambus)
i also see that Asus, Abit, Intel, and Gigabyte have versions of each.

also, 400 vs 533 ??

the 845e also has firewire (on most models)...are there any issues with who makes the firewire chipset?

any recomendations for a new system? i do both audio and video.

I'm not real sure about the motherboard chipset, but I found elsewhere that it may be picky about the firewire chipset.

Checkout:

for tested 1394 cards and other hardware. But, I'm using a cheap 1394 card I bought on eBay and have never had a problem or dropped a frame (VIA chipset).

for more info on 1394 chipsets.

On this page:
http://www.sonicfoundry.com/support/supportproduct.asp?familyid=52&family=videofactory&topicid=78&detailid=879

it states "There are known problems with VIA chipset motherboards and bandwidth issues on the 1394 bus and Windows. If your BIOS includes a PCI latency setting, try increasing the setting above 32. If using a VIA motherboard, check the VIA Web site for updated motherboard drivers (VIA 4 in 1 Service Pack)."

I'm using an AMD Athlon 900 512MB ram. AMD's are awesome for the money, but can't say they are better or not than the P4s. They both are impressive.

Good Luck!

Oh yeah,

Consider dual monitors.

I've recently discovered this setup and I use it at work and at home for EVERYTHING! It's wonderful! I actually use an AGP and PCI card, but you can go with a dual head AGP and get better performance I'm sure.
