Howdy folks! I've recently upgraded machines. Here's some relevant info from my old system:
Win2k Pro
Pyro 1394 3-port fw card
Abit BH6-2 BX-based motherboard
PIII-500 w/ 256MB RAM
Maxtor 80GB dedicated media drive (5400RPM) on a Promise ATA-66 controller (PCI)
Soundblaster Live! using default settings
VV 2.0
Now for the new system!
WinXP Pro
Same Pyro card (although '1394 networking' is installed thanks to XP - disabled!)
Abit KR7A-RAID VIA motherboard
Athlon 1800+ w/512MB RAM
Same Maxtor HD hanging from the onboard Highpoint controller
M-Audio Delta 66 using Wave output settings within VV
VV 3.0
Alright, here are the symtoms: everything works great (man, is it fast now!) BUT, when I am previewing through firewire to my Sony DVMC-DA2 converter the first second or two of video always jerks just a little, then seems to right itself. Audio sounds fine via the Delta 66 and never stutters. It looks like the video is skipping BACK every few frames.
Printing to tape this never happens, ever. So really it's by no means a showstopper, but I'd love to know why it's happening nonetheless.
I tried the same config with a different VIA motherboard (Soyo Dragon+ - stay away from this one!) and experienced the same thing. So that rules out the Abit board but doesn't rule out the VIA chipset. Also tried the fw card in various slots with everything else but video disabled; probably not an IRQ thing.
I _haven't_ tried installing VV2 back to see what happens...
And I've tried playing back clips from all my various drives, so the 5400 Maxtor is not to blame, at least exclusively.
The Live! card was put back in and no change there either, so the Delta isn't necessarily to blame.
My theory is that there's some sort of timing issue when playing back video through fw while at the same time playing audio through the computer speakers; perhaps VV is trying to maintain video sync, resulting in jumpy video?
Also I haven't tried hooking my Canon camera up yet and previewing through it - possibly some issue with the Sony and Windows XP...
One thing I haven't tried is playing back media from a drive that's on one of the first two IDE channels (non-RAID). I'll try that tonight; possibly there's a DMA issue going on there.
Any other suggestions? Has anyone else noticed similar results when previewing out through firewire? Again, it's no big deal since playback otherwise works fine.
