Hmmm, there used to be a setting under "Options" > "Preferences" > "General" that was called "Enable Windows XP Therme Support." Turning that OFF usually solved the problem you're having. That setting was in v8 but has been moved to the hidden "Internal" preferences in v9.

WARNING: Messing with the internal preferences can really screw things up if you aren't careful. That said, the folllowing procedure should be safe enough... nevertheless, I'm not responsible if anything happens.

To get to the Internal Preferences, hold the SHIFT key when you click on "Preferences" and there will be an extra tab called "Internal", select that and type "theme" in the box that says "Show Only Prefs Containing." That will show the "Enable Windows Theme Support" field, change it to "FALSE" then click "Apply" and see if that fixes your problem. If it doesn't fix it, change it back to "TRUE" and maybe someone else has the answer.

It's now "Come-Out" as it's now under Display > Vegas Colour Scheme

Try View/Windows Layouts/Load Default

I ran into a similar problem a few weeks ago.

Force yourself to use the Vegas color scheme for a day or so. I did that and would never switch back to the windows color scheme.. It was not getting used to it, it really is more pleasant... But again, its a a matter of taste - and habit.

The dimmed scheme is actually is very pleasant for your eyes, especially if you edit in a slightly dimmed environment, and edit many hours in a row.

SCS people did not put the new scheme there because the also want to look as some competitors, it is just a preferred by many people - and not without a reason.

What happens if you now REMOVE the option?
