New twist on

Here's a different twist on getting my video to a monitor (or, maybe it's already been discussed and I missed it). Rather than spend $230 on a Canopus firewire adapter (that I don't really need), how about getting a DVD player/recorder like the one Gateway AR-230 and use the firewire input? That way I get an appliance I can use for other than video editing. What do ya think?

Thanks in advance.

What you need is analog to digital convertor. A digital camera has that, so does the Canopus. Any device that does should work.

In other words you need some 'black box' between your firewire card in your computer and the monitor/TV you want to display on. While you can hook up almost anything with RCA plugs or S video from your video card you probably won't llike the quality and it defeats the purpose of having an external monitor which is to see how your output will appear on a NTSC TV.

It looks like that should do the job. The only thing i'd be afraid of is the very slight possibility that it might *not* display the image on the TV while the firewire input is active. True, that would be an immensely stupid thing to have happen, but i've seen some equipment designers put stuff that stupid into devices before. Make sure you can return it if it doesn't do what you want.

Hm,
I agree. I'd be a little careful, it may not do analogue to DV passthrough, probably will go th eother way though. Also unlike the Canopus box I don't think it'll handle PAL, but that may not be an issue for you.
