New user Best setup for Vegas

kmaultsby wrote on 8/18/2019, 12:37 PM

Hello all I just purchase Vegas 17 Post, and it is a little different, and I was wondering what is the best my system? First this is my computer setup.
OS Windows 10
CPU AMD Ryzen 7 1700X 3.70 GHz
Memory 32 gigs
Hard drives
C:\ SSD OS and Programs
F:\ 2 TB Documents and other programs
G:\ Drobo 6TB This is where I copy all my photos and videos
H:\ SSD 500 gigs used as a Cache drive
I:\ RockStor Raid 0 1x4 TB Used to place video files to edit. Fast drive.

Graphics card: Nvidia 1070 GTX

The files I will be editing will me be mostly MP4 files. I will be editing 4K or HD with a mix of photos for a short slide show. My question is about default settings in Preferences.

1. Under the General tab: In Preferences Temporary files folder is point to the C:\ drive Is this OK or should I move to another drive?
2. Video Tab: C:\Program Files \VEGAS \VEGASPRO 17.0\VidCap60.EXE is this ok or should I move to another drive?
3. Project Properties under Video Tab Prerendered files folder has C:\Users\kmul\AppData\local\VEGAS Pro\17.0\ Is this ok or should I move to another drive?
4, Also Template shows HD 1080-60i (1920x1080), 29.970 fps. I just shot an AirShow today in 4k at 3840x21 59.97 fps and, I don't see in the dropdown. Is this just for editing in timeline settings or I will have enter it manually?

5. Is there PDF manual for Vegas 16 or 17 and if so where, can I find it?

I posted this in creative cow but only received one response.
Any help with workflow would be greatly appreciated.

4K is listed in the dropdown as "QFHD". You'll have to manually set the framerate to 59.94 in the framerate dropdown.

Go into the File i/o tab in preferences and make sure that geforce card is set as the decoder.

Make sure you have the latest Nvidia studio drivers installed.

You don't specify having a D: drive above? You want your temp files on a fast drive, just like your video files. I'd put them on the raid as well unless the SSD is faster.

Not sure about a downloadable manual.

@kmaultsby - Go to the Official MAGIX.Com site and go to “My Products”. I found it under my VP17 Download.

What and where is your D drive?
I use a partition on my SSD.

2. Video Tab: C:\Program Files \VEGAS \VEGASPRO 17.0\VidCap60.EXE is this ok or should I move to another drive?

Vegas loves most all programs on the C, so also its own.

3. Project Properties under Video Tab Prerendered files folder has C:\Users\kmul\AppData\local\VEGAS Pro\17.0\ Is this ok or should I move to another drive?

I use for this a location on my partition of the SSD

You have to choose what template you use only for better previewing,
at rendering Vegas uses the original files to encode to the rendertemplate.
Sometimes it is better to choose here the format of the sourcefiles, sometimes of your rendertemplate. With the button in Projectproperties you can choose the settings of the files you want to use or something else.

In your Magix account :https://www.magix.com/us/support/my-service-center/

BTW.
New user?

I see your first post in 2015

Maybe it is good if you maybe want more help or other questions to put your hardware and driver versions in your signature.

"For Number 5 . Is there PDF manual for Vegas 16 or 17 and if so where, can I find it?" It still shows Vegas 14. And about the New user I got Vegas 14 for free back in 2017 but never really used it. Next time I will give a title going to try it again.😉

I have another question and didn't really want to start a new post. This workflow question. I have been looking at tutorials on YouTube and I notice no one is using the Trimmer. Is everyone just placing their clips on the timeline and editing from timeline. Most of time on other editing system I do my mark in and outs and place them on the timeline. I know this is a personal preference but is it faster to just drop the clips on the timeline in Vegas? I am just trying to be as fast and efficient as possible.

@kmaultsby - I use Trimmer on short and long-haul Projects daily. Do I also use Splitting and Cutting on the Timeline? Yes I do too. Use the Tool for the job. I try NOT to fit the Job to the Tool.

I am just trying to be as fast and efficient as possible.

@kmaultsby - Nothing wrong with that. Over the twenty years of starting working with NLEs and now seventeen years of working with Vegas, I’ve learnt to be flexible with my approach to Projects. Sometimes that maybe considering for months what I’m going to do. And other times, having learnt a fistful of approaches, it maybe seconds! Seriously? They’d have to prise Trimmer from my dead hand! Dramatic enough for you?

Give yourself a chance to experiment with different ways to tear out your narrative. Discarding those that have become impenetrable and watch and learn from Walter Murch. I have several of his books and still learn from him.
