New user w/ Hardware Question

Folks..GREAT board. I'm new to DV and will use for home stuff not a job. I just purchased Vegas 4.0 + DVD based on the good discussion here vs the stability banter on the Pinnacle board.

Saw a nice thread here on super systems, but here is what I have. Is there something obvious to upgrade or should I wait until I can afford a new system.

1-yr old Gateway 700X w/ XP Pro
P4 1.99 GHZ
512MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX400 card
111GB, 7200 RPM
Will add a 2nd drive (Western on sale) of 120 GB, 7200 RPM.

Thanks.

Sonds like a good system to edit with. I have about the same and am very happy with it. A busy pro might want a faster system.

Your current system is fine - am doing loads of work with 1.6mhz 512Gig.

In adding extra drives you might follow some of the threads incorporating your new hard drives into Firewire housings. It will give you a lot more flexibility.

It's the only way I work. When I finish a project, I pull the hard drive from the housing and put it into storage. If a client comes back, I just remount the drive. That way, everything is in place... all my Vegas edit files, media files, photoshop, music, etc.

Oh yeah... keep your media files on a separate drive from your Vegas program, and defrag, defrag, defrag the media drives.
