New Vegas 5 Tutorial

TomE wrote on 10/15/2004, 3:20 PM
VTC has a Vegas 5 tutorial up finally.
You can preview the first couple of topics for free (Quicktime 6) and then you would have to either become a subscriber (which lets you watch all the tutorials they have for $25 US per month) or buy the CD or DVD version of one specific title.

I have just taken a peek at what is there and it is pretty much a basic overview of how a lot of the things in Vegas 5 work. Gary's DVD is far more thorough (I have only got his V4 version though) but this tutorial is available online so it may appeal to some. I have never seen Spot's but have glanced at the book in a book store. This VTC tutorial is not in the same league as these other guys but since I am already a subscriber to VTC it is nice to have a visual reference to check out when I am done watching the tutorials on web programs and such.

We'll see what some of the others think

Not so long ago this would be huge news, a training cd for vegas.
Spot and Gary and Tim and Edward and probably others I dont know about have this realm covered I believe.
I like the online training option.

the more Vegas users there are, the more options(training, plugs) available. econ 101

I agree winrock. It is worth pointing out that this is the first time they have done a Vegas tutorial. I have been a subscriber for about 3 to 4 years and when I became a Vegas user I started pleading with them to do a Vegas tutorial. They came close with one on ACID Pro that included a very short Vegas 3 section. They have done a recent Sound Forge 7 tutorial but now they have joined the Vegas world and I am thrilled.

I like just logging in and learning something new when I have a spare moment. I am interested in all the programs they have. They also have a new Combustion tutorial and AE is coming too.

I mentioned this in some posts a year or two ago. I think I put it to Spot to consider this online option. The way they seem to work it at VTC is anyone who can qualify can make the tutorial. Spot and Gary and others have already got avenues to distribute their stuff but for others out there this may be an option. Using Vegas and one of those screen capture apps like Camtasia or even WM9 encoder you could put together a basic tutorial. This is for the beginners and the people that are maybe playing with a demo. For the real deal you need something that goes into serious depth like the stuff that Spot, Gary and others put out.

What seems to make this a reasonable thing is that there is a whole library of tutorials covering a lot of different apps. If Spot or Gary made streaming versions of their stuff it would be just about Vegas. Of course they could cover a lot of the other apps they know too.

Anyway the more the merrier as far as I am concerned. I can't even fit the apps I know on my resume anymore. Mainly due to VTC. I know a lot of apps that I rarely use but I guess it is a hobby to learn one an know what I could use it for in a pinch.
It is fun for me to finally see Vegas up there with all the Adobe stuff.

This is pretyy cool, how did you find it Tom?

I second the vote for a Gary or Spot streaming version. Interesting concept of an amount for the month.

If anything, they should have a streaming "infomercial" sample. I know that they are probably sick of it once they get done, and don't want to edit down a demo, but it is valuable.

See www.chanimal.com/video and watch the 3 minute sample of a video I produced. This is an infomercial, but it works well to show what folks might see.

I think I will also consider a streaming version of my video (I also have a short (30 of the 55 minute) OEM version) that I could make available. Now that I have more bandwidth with my ISP it's an option.

No one wanted to pay for a streaming version when we asked about it a while back. We researched it on all 4 major forums, excepting the COW, because none of the VASST team are permitted to post there. The general consensus was that no one wanted to pay for any kind of on-line tutorial. Plus, we've got some new technology that we're paying dearly for, that will substantially change how we deliver training in the very near future. The technology is not web-conducive.

I agree with SPOT. The problem is: if I pay for a tutorial, I want to be able to go back to it - without streaming it down again and again.

I tested some of the stuff, it looks nice so far, but I would like to be able to download it to my harddisk. As long as I cannot store it, I have no interest at all.

Can someone recommend a "just past the basics" tutorial for me. I can do the basic editing, but I would like a DVD or something that can walk me through how to do some of the video effects and more-than basic titling. The new description on Sony's new Vegas 5 seminar seem to be too basic in the first part, but too detailed in the second. Is there something that can bridge me in between?

Spot, what's the issue with COW? Just curious.

With VTC Gary or Spot or anyone else prperly credntialed could make a follow up to what is there. Spot could pick a particular topic or there could be a best of Vegas tips video. It could be supplemental to their (Gary, Spot)current stuff or be even a teaser for their full fledged version.

I understand Spot polled people and no one wanted a streaming version. I think it makes more sense to put it up with a whole library of stuff. If it is a stand alone title then just buy it and you have it for your reference whenever. The streaming idea makes sense when their is a lot of content to choose from. I couldn't buy all the VTC cds and DVDs if I wanted to but for the subscription price I can watch any of them I want and jump around to the parts I want without having to buy the whole thing. I am not trying to sell VTC i am already sold on them. I just want to see more Vegas stuff up there so I am putting this out to the Vegas community. This doesn't have to compete with anyone either -- the more the merrier. I just think for me personally this would be a great thing since I am already a subscriber and I think the concept (of creating tutorials and having a whole library available for a relatively low subscribe price) is solid. Maybe it just doesn't work and or isn't worth it enough for Gary or Spot since they already have a way to distribute their stuff but for any of the other brilliant people here I think they might consider this. I have probably made too much of this so I am sorry for those who want me to just shut up already.

One of the reasons I bought Excalibur was because of the demo video Gary had made. I refer to it over and over to be reminded of what Excalibut can do. Hey, I grew up watching TV I learn by observation.

Spot used to be a host on Cow, but he moved over to DMN. Let's just say there are "irreconciliable differences."

I'll leave it at that.
Spot|DSE wrote on 10/18/2004, 12:27 PM
Suffice it to say that sometimes in life, business partners ask you to make moral compromises. I'd like to think that I'm not able to do that, and so it made good business sense to leave the COW, and made immense personal sense to leave the COW. After that, myself and most of those who agreed with my decision to leave, have been banned from posting. It's unfortunate, because there are great people in that community and I wish I could still be a part of it.
We've built a great professional community on the DMN, not terribly unlike this one, and I'm happy to be over there where Vegas receives TREMENDOUS support from the owners of the DMN, where all people are welcome regardless of political affiliations.

VTC looks nice...however...if you don the subscription package, theres no way to download the video without having to be connected to the net and stream correct? If so, I must have missed it.

Spot, whatever it was, it's good to hear that you chose moral character over the alternative. Glad to have you here, at DMN and DVINFO.

pmasters,

It used to be you could save the videos to your hard drive fo offline viewing. They have a custom player that you can use also to navigate throught the lesson. But it is all streaming afaik.

The good thing is...for 25 bucks (US) you can watch as much as you want from any of their tutorials for a whole month and then cancel your subscription. I wish I could get the Health Club to do this. Most situations you have to commit for a specified period and pay a setup of some sort. This one is a month to month deal. I have started and stoppped it at different times when funds were low or if I was waiting for them to put up a new tutorial.

My point is this method only seems to make sense if you like having access to the whole library. I do web pages and page layout and also like to see tutorials on Javascript and PHP and stuff like that. I also refer my family and friends there when they bug me for advice on how to use Powerpoint or Excel.

Thank you for saying so. It was a VERY hard decision to make because I enjoy hang'in with the communities so much. Hard to be ostracized from one because of a choice that most folks felt was right at the time. (and still do)

I think, such things as mentioned by SPOT happens from time to time - it is part of human beeing, and part of behaviour in forums and business world.

We had similar experience in the German spoken froums - www.vegasvideo.de/forum exists today only, because there has been a strong conflict between two groups of people. Resulting in the decision, that we - using vegas - decided to build up our own forum.

And - funny enough: 2 years later, that has been the absolute right decision. It has blown up the number of Vegas users in Germany, Austria and Switzerland - even without any support by Sony, since Sony still does not offer localised versions of Vegas. The nice thing is that after such a borring "war" between groups, the time after tends to bring new and better things.
