I doubt it, many people have been waiting patiently for promised updates to the current Vegas 8...And others have been waiting even longer for the 64Bit Version promised last year.. Sony has yet to deliver either one but has stated they will be forthcoming and at No Charge...
Version 9 will probably come out early next year.....
That seems very unlikely, IMO. They've already promised the 64-bit VP8 and DVDA5 will be free of charge to current VP8 users, and it's much more damaging to go back on that than to simply push back a release date.
The only way I could see them charging us for the 64-bit version now would be if they just gave up on a 64-bit VP8 and decided 9 would be the first native 64-bit version.
If I recall correctly, VMS 8 came out last summer, well before the release of Vegas Pro 8.
I'm still confident that Sony will get us another update to Vegas Pro 8, and that we'll get a snazzy new DVD Arch 5.0 sometime in the next month or two.

PS: Sync2 -- your link is pulling up an article about "Swift 3D Xpress", not VMS. Also, your thread title indicates VMS 9 as "released", when it is only "announced" at this point (though your post makes it clear you saw the August release date...)
Let me see if I can remember all the 64-bit rumors
--A Vegas 64 was supposed to go into beta in the fall of 07. No actual shipping product was ever promised for 07.
--DVDa 5 with BlueRay support was said to be coming in mid June as a free upgrade to 4.5 (doesn't look like it'll get here in June at all now.
--A VP8.0c was mentioned as coming but I don't remember when. Probably mid june as well
--Vegas 64-bit was said to be coming this fall as part of a release. Buy once and get both the 32 and 64-bit versions.
----I think the only person I've ever heard claim it'd be part of VP8 was AtomicGreymon. I can only remember seeing that claim twice now (edit-and I don't remember who said it the first time but thought it was AG). I assumed they were planning it to be part of VP9 but at this point I don't know who said what or when.
So at this point I'm expecting VP 8.0c "real soon" along with DVDa 5.0, and I'm expecting a 64bit Vegas this fall around IBC in September.
Both studio versions 6 and 8 were released quite a few months before the full/pro versions. Studio 6 ran concurrently with full 5 longer than it did with full 6.
Interesting that they plan to ship DVDa 4.5 studio with it in august. They also say that it'll burn blueray discs from the timeline, which suggests that you can burn basic blueray but you can't author blueray discs.
I wonder how this relates to the idea of seeing DVDa5 soon for Vegas Pro 8?
