Have you tried it yet? I just downloaded the demo and all I can say is WOW! This is really just Vegas Jr. with 4 Video and 4 Audio tracks. It has the full Vegas interface, keyframing on pan/crop, DirectX & VST FX, parent/child compositing, time readout on transition overlap, the works. The web site says it even includes Pixelan Spice. This kicks the butt of anything in its class ($129) bar none! Way to go Sony!!!

4 tracks? Where do you see that? In the comparison chart it lists still 3 Video + 3 Audio tracks.

In the program itself (seeing is believing.) ;-)

Either the marketing guys didn’t take full credit, or the development guys didn’t disable a function, but Ctrl+Shift+Q inserts a 4th video track and Ctrl+Q inserts a 4th audio track. (you can also right-lick on a track and select Insert New Video Track from the context menu). Way kewl!

Is there an upgrade price? I didn't see one, but may have missed it.

Does anyone know if it supports 3D Track Motion like Vegas 6 does?

And how about Intel HT support?

wow, HDV support in a consumer-priced package? i'm impressed.

now the only major thing missing is AC-3.

btw, upgrade is $60.

No 3D Track Motion.
Yes AC3 support.
Import files from DVD camcorder (from Video TS)

Maybe on purchase copy for ac3 and mpeg support.

For 3D Motion at event level - Install Satish PluginPac 3DLE Maybe Wax 2 can also
plug-in. I guess the free plug-in for Vegas can works on this version 6.

For those interested in the Platium version note the hardware requirements when using HD.

800MHz processor (2.8GHz recommended for HDV)

Upgrading from Vegas Studio it is worth the $20 for the additional software.

I just about wet myself when I saw the new feature list. A few months ago I set a list of suggestions to Sony about what I would like to see in the next version of VMS. Over half of them were put in:

DirectX and VST audio plugin support
Event Reverse
A/V Sync Tool from Vegas

In case you are wondering, the other things I asked for that appear MIA were:
1) 2-channel AC-3 encoding
2) Transitions that can be applied across multiple still images for easier slide show creation

Things that I am still unsure about:
1) Import movies from DVD camcorders. Does this mean I can import movies from standalone DVD recorders as well?
2) Does DVD Architect actually work? I was never able to burn anything with the last release. I have since switched to Tsunami MPEG DVD Author which lets me losslessly edit MPEGs (at a GOP level ).

Now granted I'm sure I wasn't the only one asking for these features ;) but I'm impressed that Sony still listens.

Just tried the demo.

Some intial impressions:

- Seems to load a little slow
- You can add an additional video track for a total of 4 video tracks.
- You can add an additional audio track for a total of 4 audio tracks.
- Video FX is keyframable!
- Composite level (same as track opacity?) envelope.
- Vidcap remains as crappy as ever for analog capture devices.
- Import DVD works! It even decodes AC-3. Con: Slow
- Nice new media generators like SMPTE Color Bars (both PAL and NTSC). Also Broadcast Colors FX
- Ability to select channels in audio (useful when only one channel has sound).
- Scrubber speed goes up to 20x.
- Icons are fugly - too pale.
- Seems to let you set custom settings for QuickTime, Real, WMV files instead of restricting you to templates only

<Edit>
- I miss the "full screen" preview option
- The help is not specific to Vegas Movie Studio
- The transitions now have a little box to tell you how long they are!
</Edit>

Has anyone tried this feature yet?
What's the process for getting it done, and how well does it work?

This might be one of the "must have"features that would really make me upgrade, since many of my projects involve lots of photos at the end of a video feature, and it's really tedious to enter the transitions individually!
volzjr wrote on 8/13/2005, 8:05 PM
I just tried applying a transition across multiple jpeg's. You just select the events you want the effect applied to, and drag 'n drop the chosen transition on one of the lines between any of the events, and it will place it between all the events. Under Options\Preferences\Editing, you can change the default length of the applied transition in the "Cut to Overlap" box. It seems you must do this before you execute the transition command. Once you drag 'n drop, the effect's dialog box opens, so you can adjust the tranistions settings. Looks like a real time saver.

I know you can preview on a 2nd monitor, but I can't see any way of undocking things in Platinum. Which edition are you using?

IanG,

Using Platinum here and yes you can detach the preview window.

In the upper left corner of the preview window you'll see a X, below that is a left arrow, and below that you'll see a vertical row of dots. Click (and drag) on the vertical dots and you'll be able to detach the window.

Thank you - I completely missed that!
