thanks for the heads up. I'm very worried about something like this because it makes up a large part of my workflow.

Just to clarify
when you say audio won't open...

do you mean that if you drag and drop from the iTunes application (any file, not just m4a stuff) into Vegas or Sound Forge,

Vegas will give an error message?

Or iTunes won't let you drag and drop any more?

or what?

Thanks

Yes,its big in my workflow too and would cause me a lot of diificulty.
Basically, audio purchased from iTunes can now longer be opened in Vegas (AAC m4a), the drag and drop option doesn't work anymore. If you a project with iTunes audio already in it and you update to the latest version of QT, you will simply get empty objects where the audio was and "media offline". I downloaded the last previous versions of Itunes and QT and every thing is back to normal. It seems that QT is the villian here, not iTunes. However the latest update from the Apple site seems only to have the 2 of them bundled together in one download whereas previously you could download them individually.
I use Samplitude 10 Pro for audio and it no longer recognises the files either with the latest QT

You can still download QT separately: Apple's QuickTime Download site. Just be sure to select the radio button for "QuickTime 7.6.4 for Windows XP or Vista" rather than the first button which includes iTunes.

You can supposedly download older versions from their support site, but the search results are a nightmare.

Just to clarify, at least for me, Vegas now refuses to recognize any AAC audio, not just audio purchased from itunes. It is all AAC audio, i.e. mp4, m4a. I receive the 'stream not recognized' error.

Does anyone think I would be asking for trouble if I rolled back to quicktime 7.6.2 but kept itunes v9?

I guess itunes 8.2 and quicktime 7.6.2 would go hand in hand?

If you roll back your QT to the previous version, these files will work again in Vegas.

I'd just like to confirm I've had the same issues of non working .mp4 audio and not being able to open quicktime audio properties within Vegas after upgrading to iTunes 9, which automatically installed QuickTIme 7.6.4.

As mentioned, uninstalling BOTH iTunes and Quicktime and then installing the older version of QuickTime 7.6.2, fixed my problems.

I hope Apple and/or Sony are fixing the problems, so we can upgrade to the newest QT.

It has been my experience, using Final Cut pro, that Apple does not concern itself with compatibility issues and QT. They upgraded QT one time that broke the Captures for the Version of FC that I had, and did not ever fix it. They assumed you would just upgrade to a new version of FC.

I am having the same problem with the audio missing from videos taken with my iPhone.

I wish Sony/Vegas would just stop using Quicktime for some codecs period. I think we all see some improvement in Vegas stills and "mov" processing speeds with other codecs. Apple appears to be moving from the PC media center battle to just supporting iTunes, where all the money is. ;-)

Rolling back to version 7.6.2 definitely solved the problem. Left feedback with Sony, Apple, as well as with my neighborhood Apple store.

I'm just finding this out as well. It sucks because it was SUPER convenient to just drag and drop. It was beautiful.

Only I'm on a new computer, so I have no previous version.

Well, I guess it's back to the 'burning to CD-RW' again.
