New video posted on Vimeo: Scuba Steve

I just posted a new video on Vimeo. It's a promo for a guy who teaches scuba. I did two videos for him in exchange for getting a basic open water PADI certification (which I thought was a pretty good deal).

I'm not totally thrilled with the Vimeo encode. I used a 6k bitrate for the mp4 encode. What bitrate do you guys use? Can I go a little higher?

You'll enjoy the diving Laurence, especially in open water. Here in Canada though there aren't too many clear waters so visibility isn't that great. I actually took it a step further and got my commercial divers License and dove on the pro end for about 5 years. Different experience from PADI or sport diving though. In sport diving you breath straight air whereas in commercial diving you get into deeper depths, breathing Heli-ox mixes, and talking like Donald Duck.

You'll have to start looking at underwater cases and such for your equipment. It's a whole different world down there!

Sounds like you need to dive in Lake Superior.
My sister and her son have done several dives on various shipwrecks there and she's never complained about the visibility :-)
Not as good as anywhere in the Caribbean but a lot better than any of the other great lakes.

Yes, I must admit, Superior is not too bad. There is also WestHawk Lake In Manitoba which is pretty deep BTW. Anything above the treeline is relatively clear as well, but then Commercial diving is quite a bit different than sport diving. We actually did our shallow water training in zero visibility (Underwater welding, explosives....etc) in a sh*tty little duck pond about 60 feet deep. Couldn't see your hand dead in front of your face. It was quite the experience.

Just talked this weekend with a diver who said the Apostle Island dives were great. Also, when I was in the Merchant Marine back in 1970, I'd look over the side in Lake Michigan and couldn't spot the bow bubbles more than a few feet down. But then we'd go through the locks, and in the middle of Superior, it was like being in the Bahamas.

Of course shoreline turbidity could change all that ...

Hey, that looks like a great video, well shot, and very watchable (kept me entertained with good subject matter etc...) but, while others may not agree with me, I think the intro should start out with him looking at the camera for the "hi, my name is steve," etc... etc... . Now I know that many folks say not to look in the camera but I break that 4th wall whenever I do a promotion video with head and shoulders intro addressing the viewers, to me it always makes me feel like there is just something off. My general rule of thumb is that when I am taping a testimonial ( or someone who should have added independent credibility ) I shoot them looking off camera as though it's an interview. The direct promotion / information looks at the person they are talking to. Anyway, Like I said, it's great, I just would have done that first bit different.

Thanks for your kind words. You're probably right about the "looking into the camera" thing. I hadn't thought of that. Usually the only time I see somebody look into a camera is when there is a teleprompter attached. Next time I'll try that.
