Besides arranging the windows in favorable layout, are there any common adjustments that a DV editor should make to Vegas' default Options/Preferences?
For whatever reason, Vegas always defaults audio tracks to have three effects pre-added. Although they're all set to null (no effect), there's still no particular reason to have them there slowing down playback and rendering (albeit very slightly). Add an audio track, open up the effects chain, delete all three plugins, then right-mouse-button click on the track header (that colored tab on the left edge of the screen) and choose "Set Default Track Properties". This will cause all future audio tracks to be created with no plugins.
Conversely, if you decide that there are plugins, pan settings, volume settings, etc. that you always do want to have by default in all your audio tracks, you can set them all and then Set Default Track Properties to include them. Similar things apply to video tracks as well.
You might want to assign default project properties, like the drives where you want prerender files and recording files. You can check the box to "open all new projcts with these settings". Likewise in Vegas Capture, you might want to assign your capture drives/directories.
In prefs, you might want to select a directory for temp files, set the max ram for previewing, "enable looping" of clips when they hit the end of the media, recompress edited frames for external preview.
You SHOULD activate "Quantize to frames" until you need to do sub-frame audio editing.
There will be lot of preferential settings that you will find as you progress. i.e. I prefer to see the TC numbers in the clips in the timeline and the names of the clips. You might not... Vegas is very configurable.

Subject: VV3 start up suggestions
I made this list for someone else to help with starting out in Vegas Video 3
from a clean default type installation. These are the things that I always have
to set first when I install VV3 for the first time. I had to do it a lot during
beta testing so we had a clean starting point. This is for DV NTSC setups.
Other formats will have to adjust as needed and you can always make your own
custom settings. Sometimes problems can be avoided if you set your prefs up
correctly.
===============
After a clean installation of VV3, make sure you go to:
File -Properties-Video and make sure you have the "Template" set for the
default DV NTSC and also set your "Prerendered files folder" to a video drive
you have installed and not your C drive partition. Do the same in the next tab
for Audio and set the Sample rate to 48,000. Go to the Ruler tab and select
SMPTE Drop frame.
Now go to Options-Preferences-General and set the Temporary files folder to
your video drive and not your C drive partition. It is near the bottom of the
window. Make sure you have "Ignore 3rd party codecs" checked and you do not
have "Use MS DV codec" checked. I also use "Make spacebar play/stop" as a
personal choice.
Also, go to the Video tab in this menu and set your Dynamic Ram preview. I use
256. Make sure you select 64 mb less than what it shows as your max available.
Go to CD Settings and select your drive. I then go to the Editing tab and I
uncheck "Enable looping" and I check "Collapse loop region". It is a personal
choice. Finally, go to the Video Device and set your Device to OHCI and make
sure the box is checked at the bottom for Recompress edited frames.
One more thing that I do is make a custom toolbar. Everyone will want different
things. I suggest adding the Lock button to the toolbar and removing things you
do not need to use very often. I probably remoce about 6 items and add about
another 6 items. Make sure that "Options-Quantize to Frames" is enabled and
that Ignore Event Grouping is not enabled on the toolbar. Also, enable Ripple
on the toolbar if that is what you need at the moment.
In Vidcap (the built in Video Capture program), make sure you select your video
drive to capture to and not your C drive partition under Options-Preferrences.
There are other settings that will vary with each persons setup. I also shut
off scene detection and use deinterlace for still image captures.
Make sure to use the default DV NTSC template for prerenders and project
renders. Of course some of these settings may differ for each person, but maybe
it will help some who are not setting some basic things to begin with.
