First of all, what you want to do is "edit" your video, not "crop" it.
"Cropping" is when you want to view a portion of your frame, "cropping" out the unwanted portion.

In order to split your event, position your cursor at the desired point, and hit "S." Then you can click-drag the edges and reposition your split events as you desire. This is covered in the Help section. Good luck!

It sounds like you aren't talking about 'crop' as in pan and crop but rather you want to remove some segments from your video on the time line. Easy:
Pplace your curser at the beginnning of the section that you want to delete and press "S" (for Split). Whatever happens to be grouped with that event and is under the curser will be split to (such as the audio for a video scene). Then move the curser to the end of the event you want to delete andf press S again. The select (highlight) the section that you just split and hit delete. If auto ripple is turned off you will have a space there. If auto ripple is turned on the track events beyond that point will slide down and fill that space automatically.
