I just did my first Wedding Video from stills with Vegas. Turned out pretty well. But I am having a problem editing the motion video of the entire wedding. I have converted it brought it into Vegas, but here is the problem:

It is coming into the system as a very short clip (at least in the timeline). It plays the entire video, but I cannot figure out how to expand it in order to edit it. When I try to edit it seems that much of the video "overlaps" itself.

As a newb - I am sure it is something I am overlooking, but I have tried every botton I can find and "no joy!".

Any help is appreciated!

Have you expanded the timeline? One way to do this is with the scroll wheel; up expands, down contracts. Other ways are covered in the manual.

How do you mean "converted it"? Did you capture it in NTSC DV format direct via your MiniDV camcorder / firewire or did you convert it from some other format (VHS)?

Trying to understand what is happening here. When you drag the video clip onto the time-line you are saying it only takes up a few seconds on the timeline? And yet it still plays the entire video? How are you playing the video on the timeline?

Hmm... really lost here. How long is the video and how long does the clip appear to take up on the timeline?

You can expand the timeline by clicking on the + icon on the lower right side of the timeline. That should allow you to zoom in on the individual frames in the video.

When I try to edit it seems that much of the video "overlaps" itself.

I think I am misunderstanding what is going on here. I cannot picture what is going on at all.

Oh well I hope I have managed to help a little at least.

Hi Shep,

From one newbie to another...I hope this will help.

1. To expand the clips on timeline: Click on the + sign located at bottom right of timeline. To expand vertically click on the + sign on the vertical scrollbar. To expand horizontally, click on the + sign on the horizontal scrollbar. You may click multiple times as required.

2. Clips overlapping : The "automatic crossfade" (icon located above the timeline that looks like a folded napkin) may have been activated when your multiple clips were brought into the timeline.This causes all the clips to overlap. So if you don't want overlaps ,deactivate the icon ..before ..you drag the clips to the timeline. I am not sure how to automatically undo overlapped clips once on the timelinec. I drag the clips manually to the right...still learning :)

That in incorrect. Automatic crossfade should be left on for just about any video editing.

It is the 'Automatically overlap multiple selected media when added' option in Preferences > Editing that does this.
