Newbie Capture Question

Hi all,

Really sorry for asking a very very basic question. So basic in fact, that I have failed to find an answer anywhere on here or the net.

I am new to all this. I don't have a camera yet. I have been asked to download some footage from a Panasonic DVX100 next week. My question is simply this:

Do I need a video capture card in order to do this????

I have firewire on my PC. Can I simply plug the camera into my firewire port and then capture?? Will I have to buy a capture card which plugs into my firewire. (I have no more PCI slots available)

I know I would need a capture device to get analogue footage into Vegas, but if it is DV, can I just go straight from camera to firewire port???

I know this is so basic, but I really have looked hard for an answer.

Many thanks.

Kev

If your firewire input is OCHI compliant (chances are good if recenty made), then you are good to go.

Thanks Gary, It is compliant! Or at least is says it is in Device Manager.

Anything else I need to know? Will Vegas recognise the DVX100??

This is good news

Cheers,

K

When you get it connected VidCap will display it as "Microsoft DV Camera or VCR". Select this as your video input device and all will be well.

If you have Windows XP the camcorder should even show up as a browseable device under My Computer.

Excellent. That is great help.
I still plan to buy a capture card for analogue stuff. Bidding on a Canopus ADVC 100 on ebay at the mo.
Many thanks for your time.
