newbie has issue with mp4 importing

I have about a 10 minute mp4 video where I need to pull out 4 one-minute segments. I import it to Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack, but it is distorted immediately after importing...shows it even on the timeline. Can't even recognize the people nor scenes. I would call it pixelating.(?) Is also terrible in the preview pane, and also after rendering. However, it plays just fine with Quicktime. I don't need it in any other format...I just need to cut out certain segments of the video. So why is it so bad upon import? Bad frame rate?

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3Ghz, 1.97Ghz running XP Pro SP3 with 3G RAM.

...and of course under a time deadline. Thanks in advance for any assistance to this newbie!!

Hi and welcome to the forums,
Questions relating to Movie Studio 9 should be posted in the Movie Studio forum.
Include the type of camera and thorough file information in your post there.

This little tutorial I wrote will help get you started down the right path to provide the right kind of information that will lead you to a solution. See especially item #4 in the tutorial.

If your files have DRM encryption, such as some iTunes videos, there is nothing you can do in Vegas to overcome that.

Much appreciated. I'll review the tutorial and post to the correct forum next time too. BTW, I didn't record the video. They gave it to me to pull out sections for quick use at work here. We have less than 10 people in our office, so I'm fumbling through learning this rather quickly. I edited and rendered 3 different videos yesterday, so was surprised when this issue popped up this morning.
Thanks again and happy holidays.
