Newbie help VPro9a and mpg4 crashes

Joules wrote on 8/24/2009, 10:36 AM
Hi there, I have recently switched to VPro9a (64bit) from the Studio range, to make best use of a new high spec PC I have. I am using a Sanyo HD Camcorder recording in .264 mp4. After a few mins of dragging captured footage into the timeline VPro crashes producing the following error. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Just for the record: I just got back from Alaska and last night used Deshaker to stabilize a lot of hand-held shots with the Sanyo HD2000. Once I tried to load a large number of clips onto the timeline all at once and Vegas crashed. But by loading only a handful at once, I stabilized and rendered out perhaps a dozen more without any hitch whatsoever in 9a. I did this with a Q6600, 4GB RAM, Asus P5B; WinXP 32 bit. Hopefully, you'll find some work-around on your computer.

Thanks for the advice. The problem does seem to be a compatibility issue. My Machine is an i7 3.0Mhz 12GB Ram, NVidia 295 2GB etc so the machine is not the problem. The following exactly describes my experience...

I spoke too quickly.... It seems Vegas 9.0 (and 8.0c) is completely inconsistent when editing MP4 files generated by Sanyo's latest HD cameras (HD2000 and VPC-FH1).

On my new i7 machine with Vista 64 bit, I can't get Vegas (9.0 or 8.0c) to edit these MP4 files. It will either show red for thumnails and play only the audio for these clips. Even weirder.... it worked on my Windows 7 RC 64 bit OS for about 30 minutes, playback and editing was amazingly smooth.... and then Vegas started showing red for clips.... and then playback become choppy.... and eventually all clips showed red on the timeline.

I feel like I'm loosing my mind. There is absolutely no consistency with Vegas and MP4 files!

I have tried Neoscene and this worked OK BUT! the file size is 9 times that of the original and it wont pick up audio??

What about just rendering out the raw mp4 files as mt2 files and then editing the mt2 files?

I'm thinking of buying one of the Sanyos, but these editing issues are keeping me away for now.

I noticed on another thread that the latest version of GearShift will create proxies from AVCHD files. Will it do the same with Sanyo's mp4 files? I have an old version of GearShift and I'll glade upgrade it if it could do the job.

Hi Joules,

There has been other threads with this problem and the solution:

Could be related?

I tried rendering as mt2 and could not get audio

Thanks Ulf,

I have followed the link and now tried Vasst, keeping with HD and converting an mp4 50mb file to a 1080 50i avi resulted in 3.3GB!! typically I have around 50~60 short clips so this is not going to work for me.

I might be asking for the impossible but having tried neoscene too I really need to stick with mp4 else the footage pre edit will be huge

no idea about that particular camera, but i convert all my avchd material to mxf with no problems and reasonable file size...

Hi Ulf,

What software do you use for the conversion? and do you suffer any problems with audio. The Sanyo is AC3 I believe.
