I'm trying to capture video from my Pasasonic 3CCD digital to the capture video portion of the project media window. When I click the camera icon and select tape, a window pops up tha says the suretn device has had a communications failure-please dismiss the dialog box and then cycle the power on the device. I turned off the camera and redid the process to end up withte h samem response. What am I doing wrong?

do you have the camera set to vcr mode?

I have it set on the PC icon. The other
icons I have are photo, photo playback, camera, camera playback.

Is it a DV camcorder connected through firewire? My guess is that "camera playback" would be the appropriate setting.

Do you have a Firewire drive also connected? Is so, try turning that off. Also, which service pack of XP do you have? SP1? SP2? There are some Firewire patches that sometimes help this sort of thing.

Each camera is different but it sounds like you may be using a USB cable and have your camera in the wrong mode. Let’s start with the basics:

Your camera has two ways to connect to your PC.

1) USB cable to a USB port.
2) Firewire cable to a Firewire (IEEE1394) port

USB is used for transferring still images not video. Firewire is for transferring video not still images. So if you are trying to transfer video, make sure you have a firewire cable going from you camera to your PC. The camera should be in Playback (VCR) mode as Chienworks said and not PC mode. PC mode if for transferring still images.

Once you have the camera connect via firewire and set to playback mode your PC and Vegas should see it as a DV device and capture should work fine.

I do have firewire as well. I will try it in playback mode.
Thanks JR

It should be noted that some of the newer cameras will transmit video over the USB cable but it’s "web quality" mpeg video that you wouldn't want to use anyway. I think having it in playback mode should do it for you if you are already using firewire.
