Newbie needs help with transitions

I have captured multiple scenes and events into a vegas project and am having difficulty inserting transitions between events. When I click and drag a transition between two events, it is very quick. To extend the transition, I hover over the top and drag it to the right (1/4 oval appears), or I drag to the left (rectangle appears). The transition seems to work ok, but just before it occurs, the beginning of the very first scene appears for a split second, then transitions into the second scene. Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

The easiest way to do the transition is to drag the clips to where they overlap by whatever transition duration you want. Then drag and drop the transition you want to where the clips are overlapped.

If you drag the end of a captured clip beyond it's full length, it will loop back to the beginning - that's probably what you're seeing - you can confirm this by looking for a grey triangle at the top as you drag the end.

To avoid this, as swampler says, move a complete clip (called an "event") by dragging from within it rather than dragging the end, and overlap it over an adjoining event by the amount you want the transition to last - this will give you an immediate cross fade which can be replaced by any other transition by dropping it onto the overlap.

I was on this subject on another thread and the whole thing clicked with Peter Wright's explanation. I got it now.
