Newbie question on Vegas Effects

Sycraft wrote on 10/22/2023, 3:36 AM

I'm a hobbyist user of Vegas, never done much complex with it, though I've used it for quite a long time. This time around, I decided to upgrade to Vegas Post, since I want to play around with a project with more generated effects. It's going well so far, I'm slowly learning how to use the various FX plugins and I'm happy with the results.

However at the moment, I've doing all the compositing in Vegas Pro itself. It seems extremely competent at it, and it's easy to just work on something inside of it. So what would be the use case for loading a clip into Vegas Effects and doing the effects compositing there? When would I want to look at using it rather than just doing compositing in Pro?

It is likely for things beyond what I'm going to do, but I'm just curious what the advantages/use cases are for it over the Vegas Pro composition features.

Besides additional FX, Vegas Effects offers particle generators as well as much more complex 3D compositing than is available in Vegas Pro. On the following Vegas POST product webpage, scroll down to the Vegas Effects section (including opening "show more") for more information.

Vegas Effects is a trimmed down version of HitFilm Pro (the Pro version does not seem to be offered any longer on HitFilm's website) so it might be worthwhile having a look at some of HitFilm's YouTube tutorials on its 3D capabilities:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=hitfilm+pro+3d+compositing

... but please keep in mind that 3rd party FX that come with HitFilm Pro (e.g. Mocha HitFilm, Foundry) do not come with Vegas Effects and that Vegas Effects is designed to be accessed event-by-event from Vegas Pro's timeline. But then with Vegas POST 21, you should have Mocha Vegas for use in Vegas Pro which is much the same as Mocha HitFilm other than the process for transferring Mocha Vegas data for use in Vegas Pro.

Thanks. So for me, probably not something I'd have reason to use since I picked up the expansion pack and the particle effects in Particle Illusion are amazing.

One other question: Does it improve performance by fully rendering the clip before transferring it back to Vegas, or is it done in realtime and thus the same hit as if you stuck the effects on the timeline?

@Sycraft there are more effects than just Particles. I've had Ignite Pro for several years as a plugin for Vegas Pro. With the demise of Ignite Pro from Artlist (no love for them), in Vegas Effects, it's there.

The clip (AFAIK) is not rendered going back to Vegas from VE. That way, if you have to go back to VE, you can with the event with the fx on it. If it's rendered, it's just another event on the timeline.
