newbie questions

after exhaustive research of available dv cams in the $500-$1000.00 range, my head is spinning and i can't narrow down any selections. what has become evident to me is that i need:

- manual audio controls
- optical image stabilization
- decent lower light video quality

i also would like something that's not so small. my goal is to make a reasonably entertaining short film (after much trial and error, of course).

i'm an audio engineer, and i look forward to getting involved in the foley and otr aspects of film making, but don't necessarily want to have 100% wild audio, thus needing a camera with xlr inputs - which doesn't seem possible for $1000.00??

anyone know which cam has the 3 criteria i listed above for the best price?
also, can you recommend any sites which have films available for viewing that were shot with not so high end dv cams?

thanks.

You can add XLR to any camera with a unit like the Beachtek, etc. You're going to have a hard time finding any camera with good chips for low light ability for sub 1K unless you look for used. You should find any number of GL1's, etc on Ebay or at a shop that sells used, like B&H or Sami's.

thanks, i wasn't aware of that beachtek unit - it makes a lot of sense.

i fear buying fragile technology used - i'm set on a new warrantied unit.

so i gess it's reasonable to find a camera with optical stabilization for $1000.00. that's good news.
