You don't say what format you are aiming to start / output with.

Basic off the shelf Vegas contains more than enough codecs to get you going - I've never needed others.

re. the circle with a slash - do you have a full version, or a demo?

When i goto add a transition why does it just have a circle with a slash through it when i try to drop it in?

Are you overlapping the two clips first and then dropping the transition on the overlap?

PeterWright:
i am using 5.0b
But, Where do i goto compress this?
Full, i mean that when i goto drag the one i selected to the clip, it has the circle with a slash in it.

I used fraps to record something on my computer, saved it as a .avi and then put it into vegas video. Then, i wanted to edit it, but it just doesnt let me drop a transition in. I am not sure how to overlap.

With as little information as you're leaving, it's almost impossible to know exactly what you've done. I'm assuming you're very new to this. If you drop an .avi into the timeline, you have to split the video before you can drop in a transition. I would normally have thought that you brought 2 clips together and placed them back to back. You should be able to drop a transition between these clips. Or drag the 2nd clip slightly over the end of the 1st clip (overlap) and that will create a natural fade. If you just want to add a transition in the middle of a clip, you need to use your 'S' key to create a split in the .avi and then you can add the transition or overlap as I described above.

Since you are at the very basics of VV editing, its time to download the manual. Youll be amazed at whats in there. After that grab Spots new book, and youl be amazed again. THen you edit and your friednds will be amazed at all of your "expertise".

Ah, ok. Got the transitions down and downloaded the manuel.
Another question. When i click the Video FX tab (check the picture), i drag the FX into the clip, and it add's it, but to the whole thing, and i dont know how to remove it, or just cut some off it off to add a different FX.

Use the S key to split (or cut) video clips into shorter clips.

If you only want effects on part of a clip. Split the larger clip and then drag the effect on to correct smaller clip.

Gotcha, 1 more question before i have to leave, Can you make 2 effects fade from each other?

Like, for example.. Noise: grainy fade to noise: extreme?

Yes, but now your going to have to read the manual to learn the right way. The cheesy way to do it would be to make a copy of the clip (mouse on clip, right click), split the copy at the point where you want the transition, delete section you don't need. The 1st clip would have one effect, the other the other, and overlap the 2nd clip on top of the 1st until it's in sync with the original. Depending on how long you want the transition, you'll also have to split the 1st clip and delete the part after the transition. Just leave about 5 seconds of overlap or however long you want it. (You can stack them on separate tracks until your ready to combine them.)
