Newbie: what file format?

I bought a Neuros OSD to transfer my VHS tapes to DVD. I recorded them in mp4 format, only to learn that Vegas can't work with MP4 files. (1) What file formats can Vegas work with and (2) what formats are most desirable from quality perspective. Running Windows XP, 4G Ram, lots of hard drive space (USB externals)

thank you for the help --

Probably the best format to work in is DV, but you won't get that from your DVD recorder. Vegas handles standard DVD material just fine. Record a standard Video DVD from your VHS then in Vegas use File / Import / DVD camcorder disc. This will transfer the DVD to MPEG2 files on your hard drive.

thnx for reply. I'm not sure the device I'm using (neuros OSD) can convert to DCD format.

Is there a source that explains best file formats for use in Vegas?

Which version of VMS are you using? I'm using v8 Platinum Edition and I can drag .mp4 files to my timeline and the video/audio comes in just fine. In v6, only the audio is imported.

One would think that the help would have all the supported file types listed on one page, but I could not find that. Unless you find a list somewhere else, you can just go to File > Open and look at all the supported file types.

Make sure the latest Quicktime is installed on your PC.
