The MainConcept encoder which is built into Vegas does need registering - but it's just a matter of following the links ....

For what ever reason this didn't seem to work for him so I wonder if I couldn't send him mine but don't know which file(s) it is in the Vegas directory.
Anyone know the specific path to it?

It is a modern "call home" unlocking mechanism. 5 lever mortice!

The unlocking has two keys. The unique identifier for the installed PC and the key supplied with your original order. When you register, on the phone or the web (directly via web or indirectly via the saved file shortcut ported to someone with web access), you properly unlock the subcomponents of Vegas(+DVDA if applicable).

The licensing policy allows just you to use the software on more than one PC as long as it is only executed on one at a time (unless you buy more licenses). It doesn't allow you to share usage and I'm sure there is a mechanism to detect this within the registration service.

Seriously, have your friend contact Sony Pictures Digital. As your friend has bought Vegas, it would be a pity to have to prove it to a doubting official.
