NewBlue Titler Pro 7: Anyone using this with Vegas?

studio-4 wrote on 6/23/2021, 2:30 AM

One of the cool things about returning to Vegas after my 15-year Windows' hiatus is my discovery of these new plug-ins. NewBlue's Titler Pro 7 looks simply amazing. Everything I've ever wanted in a titler within an easy-to-use UI/UX. I own an AfterEffects license (bought long ago), but I never learned how to use it; I just found the learning-curve too steep.

I have NewBlue Elements 3 Overlay and I love it (mainly using it for a single effect: the ADO-like DVE). And NewBlue's titler looks like excellent. NewBlue's demo shows that it works within your NLE, so I assume it opens its own window from within Vegas, so it probably feels more like round-tripping. Anyone own this and care to comment on what it's like to use with Vegas? Thanks!

@studio-4 Titler Pro 7 is fundamentally a brilliant plug-in (also works Standalone). I say 'fundamentally' because, although you can get amazing results, in many ways it's extremely frustrating to use. It didn't used to be, but there have been so many builds of TP7, each build introducing more inconsistencies, that it's quite challenging to use.

Usage:- It has its own entry in the Media Generator tab and has only a default preset. It can be added to the timeline in the same manner as the Titles & Text plug-in but it opens in its own full size window (best used with two monitors). It can also be added as an event FX but is not normally used that way.
The learning curve is quite steep (I've produced a number of tutorials about TP7 on YouTube, but most of them are for old builds), but as I have said, the results are well worth the effort.
As a plug-in you can create many titles or lower thirds on your VP timeline. You can also share designs between titles so that a change in the design of one title automatically updates the design of other titles that are shared.

It's not possible to detail all the benefits of TP7 here. Take a look at my TP7 tutorials on YouTube (my channel name is Veteran Video Editor) to get an idea of its potential.

I completely agree. Until the latest build of TP7, TP7 was virtually unusable within Vegas Pro because positioning titles over the background image was not even close to real-time and suffered from huge time lag or having to click on the TP7 window in order to get the repositioning to update in Vegas Pro. The TP7 standalone however was not a problem - but then there is no background image to design the title over if that design requirement was necessary. The latest build of TP7 is greatly improved but still suffers from a bit of lag within Vegas Pro. Previous versions of TP did not have this lag problem at all.

@studio-4  ... if you do a forum search using 'Titler Pro 7' as keywords, you'll find a lot of comments about the earlier builds of TP7 over the last few months. But again, NewBlueFX has mostly but not completely fixed those problems.

I've had all 7 versions of Titler Pro and fully appreciate the excellent titles that it can produce, but it has been let down by many techy problems over the years - probably from TP4 onwards. These days, I use Titler Pro for advanced titling tasks (and saving the projects) but use BorisFX's Title Studio for 'everyday' titles like place names because NBFX Titler Pro had a history from previous versions of completely disappearing titles - I lost confidence in it. Fortunately, the disappearing titles hasn't occurred with TP7.

@studio-4 thanks for your interest in Titler Pro 7!  I'm glad that you're enjoying working with our plugins. As a user of both Titler Pro (and shhhh, After Effects), I can attest that TP7's animation-based workflow allows you to create elegant, animated titles in a fraction of the time. Of course, Titler Pro is much more focused on title design specifically.  So, its workflows are quite simple once you get familiar with them. You are correct that the Title Designer is launched as a separate window from within VEGAS. We have a help article that outlines the entire VEGAS workflow.

@Jack S and @Dexcon we appreciate the feedback! In 2020, we put special emphasis on resolving issues with TP7 that were important to the VEGAS community.  It is great to hear that we made significant progress in improving the experience of working with Titler Pro in VEGAS! Of course, we understand that there is still work to do.

@Dexcon you'll be happy to learn that one area we'll be focusing on, in the coming months, is improving the Video Background preview in the Title Designer.  I would also be interested in learning more about the lag you are experiencing.  If you're willing, please send a message to support@newblueinc.com and mark it Attention: Caleb, so we can connect.

@set - we'll get you to TP7 one of these days 😉

Thank you chiming in! As one of NewBlue's staff, I want to compliment you and your team on creating such a cool company with neat new products. I read the company's story and loved it! From your demos, I'm quite taken with Titler Pro 7 and the fact that it also works standalone may be a huge workflow benefit for me.

I'm probably not the typical user for a titler program. I using Vegas and its various plug-in effects less for traditional things, and more for like, art projects. Though I claim to be a filmmaker (and professional TV cameraguy by day), I've really been enjoying the graphic and design applications of these tools, more than for their conventional narrative film editing merits (though I'm doing that also).

Or in the case of Titler Pro, less for titles, lower-thirds, and bumper-graphics, and more for neat type applications, combined with video.

For example, I got NewBlue Elements 3 Overlay specifically for the image-map effect (i.e., putting virtual planes of motion-video in 3D-space). I would like to project virtual screens in the sky, perhaps even reuse the "blank billboard" visual trope with type as the main focus; i.e., type for type's sake.

So I would image-map type onto these billboards to flash type-based designs on these sky-high "screens." Or, to create emulations of modern electronic billboard signage with either real or imagined commercial advertisements.

Most of my favorite typeface libraries are among all the iterations of Helvetica (e.g., extended, condensed, outline, etc.). Futura and Univers are also high on the list. And as cheesy as it is, I love the LED font! My favorite serifed font is Palatino. But playing with type, and using type as primary elements is something I just love to do. For example, I had some fun mimicking the Starz' TV-series "THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE" type-treatment using Helvetia Neue Thin in all-caps:

Quick question: One effect (which may be unique to BorisFX' Title Studio) is Boris' "Type On" effect. I would use this fairly often to simulate "computer-screen typing." Is there a similar tool or preset in NewBlue Pro Titler 7 to achieve this? Thanks!

@studio-4 The answer is 'Yes'. In TP7's library, in the transitions section, animations sub-section there's a preset called 'Type On' (at the bottom of the list) which I believe is what you want.

Well, I've gone through some tutorials for both apps, and read a nicely balanced review on HitFIlm's forum comparing both titlers. Although I was considering the standard-upgrade to Vegas Pro 18 Edit to get Boris' Title Studio, NewBlue's Titler Pro 7 seems more accessible. Even if I get the $149 upgrade (versus the $99 offer) I still get Boris' titler, but I only want to invest in learning one or the other since both seem fairly complex.

So I'm either going to go for the $99 Magix offer (which is still good for some reason), and buy Titler Pro 7 directly from NewBlue for $299, or go for the Vegas 18 Suite upgrade for $299 and dig in to Boris' titler.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'll just wait until after June 30th when the current $149 upgrade offer is expected to expire and see which effects-pack may be bundled next (since I already own NewBlue Elements 3 Overlay, currently bundled in the $99 special-offer).

Overall impressions are pushing me toward NewBlue's titler at the moment; however, Dexon's report of screen-lag while positioning text has me a bit concerned. Anyone else experiencing this delay in TP7?

@studio-4 Anyone else experiencing this delay in TP7?

Yes, unfortunately the latest builds (I think the latest is 210317) do have this delay at times. The delay is caused when a design is changed for any reason. TP7 insists on rebuilding the title cache on every title whether it's been changed or not. Even changing the text string on one title causes a re-caching of all the titles. This impacts on the updating of all the titles on the VP timeline, hence the annoying message 'Scrub to refresh' message that appears on every title.
The delay is obviously longer if you have many titles and the complexity of the designs. The delay may be mitigated if you have a powerful system, which I haven't, hence my frustration with it. However, the results you can get from it are so impressive that I've learnt to live with it. I do appreciate though, that this delay can be a problem if you need to get a project out quickly.

I feel old. I'm still using TP5.

Lol, here I am in 2023 still using TP5 as there hasn't been good enough sale to update my TotalFX 5.

@sonicvision You missed the Magix offer last yr of buy/upgrade Magix Movie Studio (MMS) & get NB TotalFX included, I had just renewed/upgraded my MMS licence just a few mths before, but i renewed it again just to get this offer, cost me about £40 https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/magix-upgrade-inc-newblue-total-fx-for-41-all-work-in-vegas-19--134210/?page=1

@Former user that is an unbelievable deal! Unfortunately, I don't have MEP, so no upgrade option (per the linked ad). Haven't seen any good upgrade deals that apply to me..

@sonicvision Yeah sorry that was last yr, but it wasn't just upgrade, it was buy also & at the moment it's only £37.99 to buy, I don't think it was that much more to buy back then so people just bought the program for peanuts & got TotalFX,

MMS is a basic editing program but I upgrade each yr simply because I've had it since 2004-ish, it plays UHD at full res well & exports in less than half the time of Vegas, Like i say it is a basic editor but a simple collection of clips can be cut & exported in no time,

I'm not suggesting you buy it btw 😉👍

If ever anything pops up I'll try give you a tag,

PS, my TP7 doesn't play the video, press Play & the screen goes black, I remember reading about this but that was a while ago...

Like @Former user, last year I too upgraded my Movie Edit Pro 2016 to MEP2022Plus and got NBFX Total FX 7 for $50USD. A steal. I told another Vegas user friend of mine about it, he did the same thing. No, not all of TFX7 worked in Movie Edit Pro, but it certainly did in Vegas and Resolve Studio.

So yes, I have TP7 and use it. I also have BorisFX Title Studio, but TP7 "feels" better for "me". And like @Former user points out, you can not play back your video in TP7 by pressing "play", but you can scroll though it dragging the playhead in it. Not the end of the world for me.

Also, I do a lot of the title work outside of Vegas. This way, Vegas isn't bogged down trying to run it and then play the clip back with the title. TP7 also has a standalone version that saves the title as a MOV file.

@Former user and @Reyfox thanks for the info. What a great deal you both got. I would have bought MEP for that deal, even if I had no intention to use MEP (though I would likely check it out). Wish I had known this last year!

I've never gotten TP5 to play video in its window, not in Vegas anyway. Can't recall if it did, or didn't, stand alone. So, it not playing in TP7 wouldn't be a deal breaker, and I read that the 'Share' option can be disabled in TP7 so that would be useful.

@Former user I would be very grateful if you do see a similar deal again that you give me a tag, thanks!

@sonicvision they do offer from time to time TFX7, but a "Magix" edition, which doesn't include transitions or stabilizer. So it's not the full version that was available last year. Those that bought it said that they couldn't use transitions or the stabilizer. So I guess NBFX is now removing what didn't work from the TFX7 "Magix" package.

Not sure if you think VPX is worth the price for the software, and I am not sure if the "Magix" verison will only install in VPX/MMS.

Magix is offering it now with Video Pro X14. NewBlue TotalFX – MAGIX Edition* We've collaborated with the professionals at NewBlue to offer you an exclusive effects bundle that includes tools for all areas of post-production, from color correction to title design. Play around with 5 packs with a total of 100 plug-ins and over 1,000 presets. Color correction: NewBlue Filters 5 Ultimate Title templates: NewBlue Titler Pro 7 Image optimization: NewBlue Essentials 5 Ultimate Green screen editing: NewBlue Elements 3 Ultimate Light effects: NewBlue Stylizers 5 Ultimate * NewBlue TotalFX – MAGIX Edition is included upon purchase of new software, or when you upgrade Video Pro X. This Edition is supplied without stabilizer and transitions.

@Reyfox thanks for that info. I have the full TFX5 from NBFX and want to use all its features in any editor/stand alone. I see I can get the upgrade (non Magix) for $199 but I may plead to NBFX and see if they will give me a better deal but as it appears it hasn't been updated in 3 years may just wait and see what TFX8 looks like, if/when that comes out. Meanwhile Boris FX updates their stuff yearly....

@sonicvision I "think" I bought TP7 for $99 on a sale as an upgrade. If you are on their email list, they have sales all the time. It's waiting for the right time to buy. And like you mentioned, you can contact them and see if they will offer you a better price as an upgrade.

As for updates, they do update their products. I've fairly recently updated TFX7. Some products are updated more often than others. Their livestreaming software is constantly being updated.

Transitions and stabilizer work here (although it has to be admitted that the stabilizer module is ... erm ... unstable ...)
