Nikon D3200 MOV files in Vegas Pro 8.0c build 260

Hi all,

I purchased the new entry level DSLR from Nikon about a month ago, and recently started using its movie taking capability. It has several video options, but I chose its maximum video frame size of 1920 x 1080. At that frame size, it has three frame rates, 30p, 25p, and 24p. i chose 30p for the video clips I have taken so far. It saves the video clips as QuickTime .MOV files. If I double-click one of them, it opens in the QuickTime player, which has no useable editing capability. I can advance the video frame by frame in the QuickTime Player and take frame grabs by using SnagIt. I chose the maximum frame size so that the frame grabs would be useable as snapshots.

So now, I want to go beyond that and edit the video in my Vegas Pro 8.0c. A QuickTime MOV file opens in Vegas with a "good" sound track, but black screen for the video track. Possibly .MOV files are not one of the file formats that Vegas can use. If that is the case, I guess I need a utility to convert my .MOV files to a format that Vegas can use.

I considered upgrading to the current Vegas Pro 11 during the recent discounted price period, but did not because Vegas Pro 11 apparently won't run on my Windows XP Pro. I plan to get a new, better computer and put Windows 7 on it, but in the meantime I want to get as much "good" out of my Vegas Pro 8 as I can. The Vegas Pro 8 manual says that "Vegas Pro supports the importing of a wide variety of file formats", but apparently none that my Nikon D3200 can save.

Any comments or suggestions on my situation are welcome.

I believe I was informed a few weeks ago here that .mov files will not play on the Vegas timeline (including 11, which I am using), even though they are used on the BluRay timeline (and playable on same) in DVD Architect 5.2.........a little bit of a dilemma, to be sure.

Expert users out there, is this true?

If so, is there a conversion utility available?

There is a Quicktime .dll Vegas fix that may fix what you are experiencing. Search the forum or knowledge base for quicktime and dll and you should find it. It is a download from this site.

I've been using a Nikon D5100 which I believe has almost the same file format. No problems with Vegas whatsoever.

Are you running Vegas 8, Laurence? There were some transitional issues back then. I'm still on 8, and when I recently installed Win7, I had to do the dll fix.

Sorry, I'm running on 10 mostly. 11 every so often when a new release is offered just to see if it is stable yet. I missed the part about Vegas 8.

Searching the forum produced the solution. QuickTime is to blame. The solution was to uninstall my QuickTime Player version 7.6.9 and install the older QuickTime Player version 7.6.4. My Nikon D3200 MOV files now have both sound and picture in my Vegas Pro 8.0c. Thank you for your suggestion. Problem solved.

Ah, I remember now! Newer versions of Vegas work with newer versions of Quicktime. Kind of important if you are a user of an iPad or iPhone, but a non-issue if you don't.
