No Audio?!?

I have been using various forms of the Sony (Sonic Foundry) "Vegas" MSP6 for many years but this is a first. On a recent project, I imported digital video from my camcorder (minidv) over firewire using WinDV to my hard drive. The avi files play perfectly in windows media player, but when imported to VMSP6, there is no audio file at all!!! While searching for an answer, I have seen that a few people have been led to believe that they do not have the correct codec for VMSP to read the file. Does Vegas not install the proper codec on installation? I have uninstalled the program and reinstalled it and had no luck. I just finished a project without any problems, but now (suddenly) there is no audio in the new project. Any thoughts folks??

Let's get a few things in order .... Have you changed anything in your computer system, installed new software or drivers, since the last time you successfully captured from your camera and did get audio? What's WinDV? How are you using it to transfer from the camera? Have you tried using Sony's VidCap to capture with?

Files transferred from your MiniDV camcorder to the computer over firewire will be DV .avi files. Sony's software includes it's own, very very good DV codec.

Just curious, I don't care for WinDV myself. Have you tried importing your video directly into Vegas? Cin

I have tried 'unsuccessfully' for many years to import video directly into Vegas using it's capture program. I just tried again and was unsuccessful. But this is beside the point. I use WinDV because is never drops a frame for me and uses very little resources (memory/CPU). I have never had any problem (in scores of projects) before with importing video this way and using it in Vegas, (or Sony Movie Studio or Video Factory before). I have used it many times with my current software VMSP6.

I am worried that somehow an audio codec has gotten corrupted and VMSP6 will no longer read the file properly. To this end, I have uninstalled and reinstalled VMSP6. This did nothing to correct the problem. I tried capturing all the video (over 6 hours) again but with Nero's video capture program. Still no audio.

As I stated above, I tried using the Vegas capture program but there were so many problems with that program, that I could not begin to capture that way (did not recognise the Canon camcorder, would not recognise the external hard drive, garbled the audio... and so on).

Does anyone know what codec(s) is needed for VMSP6 to recognize DV avi files?

I do not believe that I have changed anything since my last project (about a week ago).

Thanks in advance,

Mike

DV audio isn't compressed, so no codec is necessary. It's standard PCM audio, just like in .wav files.

So, WinDV is doing a DV capture though firewire that results in a DV .AVI file? Sorry to ask again, but i'm not familiar with it and am just trying to cover all the possibilities.

WinDV = http://windv.mourek.cz/

"So, WinDV is doing a DV capture though firewire that results in a DV .AVI file?"

Yes.

I tried the workaround where you run your DV avi file through the Ulead Avi 1 to Avi 2 converter and it seems like this might work. Does VMSP6 work only with AVI 2 DV files?

Obviously I must be doing something different than I have done a hundred times before but I am not sure what it is. I have never had problems with "missing audio" in files with VMSP6 before. :-/

I will keep trying...

Well I figured out what I did differently...

I normally use my Panasonic camcorders to dump DV into my computer, but this time I used a new Canon ZR850. For some reason, the files captured from the Canon are problematic in that they cannot be read by the Sony software. I tried using my old Panasonic 852 and the files came out perfect. Now I just have to recapture 6 hours of minidv video again... for the third time. :-(

Has anyone else had problems with Canon files?

As I have searched the forum archives, I have noticed that this problem has come up quite a few times with Canon minidv camcorders. Is this a common problem with Canon camcorders? Can I expect that I will not be able to use my Canon camcorder when capturing video to my computer? Is there a workaround? I tried the Ulead AVI 1 to AVI 2 software converter but it left the audio choppy...

I came to the forum because I have encountered the same problem this evening. I have not changed my Sony camcorder, firewire cable etc but now VMS has stopped importing video WITH sound.

I have not added any new software so I have no idea why this has happened! I have a PC just for editing so it is not as if anyone else has tampered with the system.

It is not the case that something has disconnected either because I have just used the same setup and both Ulead and Windows Media were able to import video with sound. How odd.

Any other ideas?
