No Audio After Video Capture

Hello,

I have a very strange problem that I have spent way too much time on. I just purchased Vegas 8c and am trying to make my 1st DVD.

The 1st time I captured the video, there was sound, but part of the video was truncated. So I deleted the .avi files and started again. I have since imported the tapes about 5 or 6 times and each time the audio is "nearly" muted. I can hear the audio if I turn all volumes up to max (in mixer and voice bar). I then noticed that a microphone was attached to my computer and I could actually hear myself talk through the speakers when I was capturing the video.

I figured this was the problem because I was writing another track simultaneously when the video was captured, just by having the mic plugged in to the sound card. I then unplugged the mic from my sound card and recaptured the video. I now have absolutely no sound!

Also, when playing back the captured video in Sony Video Capture 6, I have full sound, so I know the sound is being captured from the tape. It's just not making it to my project. After building peaks, the audio bar shows 4 horizontal lines and no squiggly line bunches to represent a sound track (if that makes sense?)

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How are you capturing? What hardware and software are you using? What is the source? How is that source connected to the computer?

Capture: USB

H/W: HP a850e Pavillion; 1 GB RAM; Athlon 3700+ processor

S/W: Sony Vegas 8, which contains Sony Video Capture 6. Audio works fine within capture s/w, just not when brought into my project

Source: Panasonic PV-GS500 mini DV tape

Connection: USB

There are lots of problems with USB. Get yourself a firewire cable instead. All problems should evaporate.

But everything works fine after capture as long as I stay w/in the video capture s/w?

I am having similar problems. Are you also seeing this when simply adding an audio track( .mp3, .wma)?

As far as the USB cable goes, stringman noted (paragraph 4; original message) that using other sw, he was getting audio from a clip that is already on the box. So it would appear that the cable did not cause the problem.

I've also noticed that when I add an audio plug-in that the volume will play at a level that I would expect for a fraction of a second. I know nothing of plug-ins yet so I don't know what I'm tring to prove, but it is an interesting clue.

My kid has played with it more than I have & he says that although the volume is nearly mute in preview, it will render a perfectly fine output file.
