no audio captured

I hope I'm doing something silly.

I can capture DV video through firewire just fine but no audio.
The audio tab in the Video Capture window shows my sound card but it's greyed out.
I can hook up the analog audio out of the camera to my sound card and hear it and record it but I don't want to capture/record that way because of all the sync hassles. I can hear audio through the camera speaker.
The audio on tape is 16bit.
Audio card is DMX6Fire.
Firewire card is Texas Instruments.
OS is Win2K.

any help much appreciated.

The sound card isn't used at all for DV capture through firewire. Audio is captured through the firewire cable along with the audio. Under Options / Preferences / Capture, make sure that "Capture audio" is checked.

Alas, "Capture Audio" is already checked. It creates an empty wav file.
I am clueless as to what I'm doing wrong here.

If you check the "Monitor Audio" setting under Audio do you hear the sound from the camera while you are capturing or previewing? More specifically, do you hear the sound from your computer's speakers, not from the build int camera speaker.

Not quite sure what you mean. If I select "preview audio" in Options I don't hear anything through my PC speakers. The only thing I see under the Audio tab is my sound card and it's greyed out. Is there supposed to be more options under the audio tab?
