It's a Vegas bug with the new Quicktime, you need to roll back to a previous Quicktime version.

Alternatively, you can re-encode the audio without re-encoding the video, using Quicktime Pro and the MPEG4 export facility (you use "passthrough" for video, but you re-encode the audio).

Thanks for the help.

I rolled back QT to 7.0.3 and Vegas said I needed at least 7.1.6. So I installed 7.3.1... and it wouldn't bring in the audio at all. So now I installed 7.5.5, and it's back to where I started - the audio is blank.

The "passthru" thing works fine, but it's always been nice to just drag the video/audio into Vegas and edit... without any extra steps.

I hope this gets fixed because I love Vegas... but I'm going to have to use Premiere until then.

"Or more specifically, when I import the video, the audio is blank. "

Some have reported success with files from these cameras by renaming the .mov extension to .mp4

Hope it works for you.

(It was QT version 7.6.4 that was causing the other problem mentioned. Probably best not to upgrade at this time.)

"renaming the .mov extension to .mp4"

I'll be damned... that WORKED! Thank You!

Glad it worked for you, we aim to please . . .

Actually, that trick works for almost anybody who knows how to rename a file extension -- you'd be surprised how many people don't have the basic Windows knowledge to do even that -- and then come back here to shoot the messenger . . .

However, if you're interested in digging a little deeper, here is a somewhat wordy tutorial I wrote some months back that lists this trick, along with several others.

Howdy,
bless musicvid and his tutorial on this. There is also a new video posting a solution to the No Audio from Kodak Zi8 problem, at http://yfrog.us/0b8909z.

Basically, the fellow says to use the crummy ArcSoft software that comes with the Zi8, and use its conversion option, setting "Select Device Model" to "Theater HD Player." Even though the "connected device" may indicate "Device connection not supported" (god only knows why it says this, quite confusing), hitting "Start" WILL convert your video to an mp4.

Better still, the resulting mp4 won't have the choppiness that I saw when trying the other solution of 1) rolling Quicktime back to version 7.6.2 and 2) manually renaming the file extensions from .mov to .mp4.

The problem has already been fixed in the latest Vegas Pro 9.0c

Look for it to be fixed in the next Studio update.

Good thing, because after I posted yesterday and went to import my newly converted .mov >>.mp4 files, I got exception errors aplenty and Studio kept crashing.

I've since downloaded & tried two other editing programs but dangit, they're just not as good as Vegas Studio. In the meantime I'm just gonna have to convert my .mov files to uncompressed .avi files, because that *does* seem to work...

I would like to thank you also for this work around. I've been beating my head against the wall trying to get the files from my zi8 to work in vegas studio 9b. I even considered going to Pinnacle last night. Whew, glad I didn't go down that road, as I really like the Vegas!!!!
Thanks!!!

I've seen lots of feedback, and the renaming workaround seems to work fine for many, but not for everyone. Again, it may depend on QT version, etc. but there is not a "one size fits all" solution yet for VMS owners.

EDIT: Sony has released a .dll to help VMS 9 owners with the "Quicktime upgrade" issue. Whether or not this has any effect on the "no audio from zi8" behavior remains to be tested and tried by the faithful here. Don't try to install a .dll if you don't know what you're doing. Post your results here, and if it seems viable, I will post the information in my other tutorial.
MPEG-4 audio is no longer functional

I've disabled the automatic updates to quicktime on my computer. I'm wanting to keep version 7.6.2. If this proves to be a pain I'll consider the dll fix. Thanks again for the help! I've been struggling with the .mov problem for over a week. I'm wanting to output to blu ray. However, I don't see any option for taking advantage of the 60fps. Is sony considering an upgrade for the 720 or 1080 at 60fps?

Eugenia or anyone else that knows -
That export trick from QuickTime worked just fine! However, I've noticed that the preview window stutters so much with these .mp4 and .mov files that it's unusable. I have no problems editing HD .m2t files on my system so is this a codec issue since these are QuickTime files?
busterkeaton wrote on 1/2/2010, 7:03 PM
mp4 files are very, very compressed and thus take A LOT of computer power to decode, even more than mpeg-2 in a m2t file.
