No capture preview at hi res

I get an error when I try to capture video at almost any higher resolution then the default 320x240 with screenblast video capture that comes with MS.
It says "An error occured during the current operation. The reason for the error could not be determined." But there is a details button that tells me "No combination of intermediate filters could be found to make the connection."
I am able to capture in higher resolutions I found after closing this window but I can't preview it while doing so. I've had to use alternative software to do my captures if I want to see what I'm capturing, but would like to use this feature in MS.

How fast is your computer, and how much RAM? Have you made sure to turn off all the background processes you can, other programs, and programs running in the system tray? blackviper.com is a good source of info as to what system services can safely be turned off. Defragging your HD wouldn't hurt, either.

I'm using a P4 3.2 with 1024 ram. ATI 9800XP pro with 256 ram. Win XP pro. and no other apps running although there are many processes. I defrag about every month or so.
It doesn't seem to be a performance issue as MS Movie Maker can capture at higher resolutions and allow me to preview.
