Cable is good? You sure? have a spare to check it with?
Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware Devices. Does it show up there in the AVC/subunit?
Any VCR or Camera mode switches on the camera that need to be engaged?
Can you see bent pins in the cable if it's a 4 pin?

Thanks for quick response...Firewire cable is good. I went into the control panel, etc. (where am I to look for this (avc/subunit) inquiry.
Camera is on VCR mode so as to capture ..
Is there anything case specific I should be looking for in Vegas software, i.e. dv devices, ohci, etc.

We must throw out at least one firewire cable per month. Some seem to fail where the cable enters the connector.

XP is a bit quirky on firewire connectors, I had the same issues with one doing the same ,XP just would not recognise my camera, I got it working by plugging the cable in another firewire port and rebooting and XP then found it again.
If it is listed in device manger uninstall it and then move the cable to another firewire port and try a reboot...

works for me..

Several things to try:

1. Shut down the computer. Turn off the camera. Disconnect the cable. Then, turn the computer back on. When it is re-booted, turn on the camera, and finally connect the cable. See if that works.

2. If that doesn't do it, Open the Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager Button. In Device Manager, click on the View menu and select "Show Hidden Devices." Look under "Imaging Devices." If you see your friend's camera listed there, right-click on it and uninstall.

If neither of these work, the final thing would be to disconnect your camera, repeat #2 above, and then uninstall your own camera driver. Re-boot the computer and re-connect your camera. It should be "re-discovered" and re-installed.

I guess one last thing would be to install the XP patch that fixes problems associated with discovery of 1394 devices (Inconsistent gap count can cause 1394 devices to not enumerate).

I explained about this patch in this thread:

Firewire 1394 Solutions

If you have XP SP2, don't apply this patch. There is a separate patch available for that release of XP software.
