No "dissolve" in Vegas Movie Studio?

First of all I'm using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 6.0

I want to do a shot which is a dissolve between two sources for the entire shot, not a transition. Sort of like the map sequences in Indiana Jones where you follow the line on the map while footage of the plane is 50/50'd on top of it.

In the help file, it lists all these Masks that are only available in the "full version" of the software. As far as I know, I have the full, normal version of Movie Studio. What version are they referring to? Pro?

Anybody got an ideas? The additive dissolve cross fade doesn't work and I tried some other work-arounds, but I just want a good old fashioned dissolve!

A dissolve is a transition. I think what you mean is that you want to have one image ghosted over another. Place one video on track one and the other on track two. Hover the mouse near the top of the video event on track one and it will change into a little hand with a pointing finger. Drag down. A blue line appears across the event. The farther you drag this line down the more transparent this event becomes, allowing you to see what's on track two through it.

As far as versions, there have been three members of the Vegas family for some time now: Vegas Movie Studio, Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition, and Vegas. This last one is the "full" version and is very much more expensive than the first two. Everyone was getting confused because most "Studio" edition users referred to their version as "Vegas" so no one knew which version was being discussed. SONY added the word "Pro" to the full edition starting with version 8, presumably to help eliminate some of the confusion.

Yes, you have the full MOVIE STUDIO version. However, the Movie Studio versions are a subset of the FULL version of Vegas (simply called Sony Vegas until version 8 which is now know as Sony Vegas Pro).
