No Drive Detected

Whistletooth wrote on 8/5/2013, 12:27 PM
I have tried to use Vegas Pro 11 to write Red Book CD's. I did all the setup, but no drive would show up when I went to burn. The interesting thing is that the drive has worked for burning DVD's. Also, every other program that I have sees the drive and burns to it.

Sony support replied to my first questions with fixes that did not work. When I asked for further help they stopped replying to my messages.

I decided to install Vegas Pro 12 trial to see if updating would fix it. But, Vegas 12 crashes every single time I try to run it. Hasn't worked 1 time, yet.

So, since the support folks at Sony refuse to continue helping me, I'll ask for help here in the forum. If anybody has had this issue and has a solution, please let me know what you did to fix this. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi Whistetooth,

First, it looks like you're new here, so first, welcome. :o)

Second, it's useful to others who may wish to help you that you fill out the "System Specs" at your profile here. Click my username for a sample. That way they can just click on your username and see what you've got. Also, include the current version number of your Vegas Pro (not the trial one).

Now, as to your problem, here are some things to consider for troubleshooting:

You say the drive doesn't show up -- but where doesn't it show up? And which drive--the burner or ___?
And does it not show up In Windows or in Vegas Pro or Architect?
(In Windows, if a drive doesn't have a drive letter assigned to it, that can sometimes cause a problem; one being that it doesn't show up in Windows Explorer.)
Is your blank CD functional? Sometimes old CDs can just kind of die if they've been stored next to magnetic and electronic stuff...

I'm only superficially aware of the Red Book standard - such as explained here. I don't know if there could be a conflict with Vegas with that particular standard, so I'll have to let the others here step in and reply on that one.

Have you tried to burn a non-Red Book or generic 44.1 or 48 CD with Vegas -- and does your drive show up that way?
Does it show up when wanting to burn a DVD?

All the above may be old-news considerations or not.
Hopefully someone here will help find a solution.

Hello and Welcome!

At what point does VP12 crash? Can you get past the splash screen? When I first installed VP12 last year, it crashed at the splash screen due to incompatible settings on my Intel and/or nVidia cards versus default GPU settings in VP12. The workaround was to enable one or the other card (I don't remember which) and then VP12 launched successfully. After that I changed the setting in VP12.

If any of this sounds promising, I'll search for my workaround and post a link to it.

Not sure if that will help with your Redbook issue, but wanted to mention it.

Regards,

Kimberly

I've added my system specs to my account. The drive that does not show up is the CD/DVD burner. Sony Vegas Pro 11 is the only program I have which does not detect that drive. And it detects the drive when burning a DVD. It's only with CD that it doesn't work at all.

I go to Tools>Burn Disc>Disc-at-Once Audio CD... and the selection beside 'Drive:' says (None). There is no drive showing up at all. I also have Sony DVD Architect Pro 5.2. The drive shows up there and I've burnt discs with it several times. The drive is assigned E: and works with all computer functions and software, other than trying to burn a CD from Vegas Pro. I also tested Vegas Pro 8, which I re-installed to test this, and it does not work either.

Sony's documentation specifically says that it burns CD's to the Red Book Specifications. You can read that here at the bottom of the 'Audio Editing Features' section which says"Red Book audio CD production": http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/techspec
I've also looked in the Vegas Pro 11 documentation and it has been part of the software since way back.

As for trying to burn it as a 'Non Red Book" disc, that's not possible. When you try to burn a disc with no track markers, the error comes up saying "Critical: There are no tracks defined in the PQ list."

The worst part of all of this is that Sony's tech support stopped answering questions after their first 2 solutions did not work. They just won't reply to my support ticket at all. Not even to say "sorry, but we just have no idea". Really sad.

Thanks for at least taking more time to help me than Sony! :)

Hi Kimberly,

Vegas 12 crashes at the splash screen about 1/5 of the way through. I've just updated my Nvidia card to the latest driver and that did not help either. I ended up giving up on Vegas and decided, that since Sony tech support stopped answering my questions, I just got other software to do this. If I can find a deal on other pro video software, I will probably drop Vegas. I would have thought that Sony would have great support. That's not been my experience in the last 4-5 years. Thanks for your help. I will keep trying things just for my own edification. And if I find a solution I will post it to help others.

The NVidia Control Panel allows you to specify which programs use the High Performance NVidia Processor. If Vegas isn't already listed among the programs that use this, give that a try and see what happens. That solved my crash at the splash screen last year when I first installed VP12.

Once I got Vegas launched, I went into Options/Preferences/Video and turned off the GPU acceleration.

It seems kinda dumb that VP12 should ship with GPU acceleration turned on by default; perhaps that has changed in the latest builds but as I recall that was problematic for a few of us in the first build.

Hope that helps . . .
