No Monitor Preview, No Sync?

After capturing from a Sony TRV20 and then placing the clips on to the time line, the external monitor will not preview the clip(s) (unless in Pause mode) If I try print to tape I get the same, Colour bars and black is fine but as soon as the video appears, blue screen almost like loss of sync. If add a solid Colour from the media generator on to the time line, the preview works albiet blocky as it now requires rendering.

If I use footage captured from a diffrent machine (Panasonic DV1000) the preview flickers a bit but after while settles down to a viewable screen.

I am at a loss as to the root of the problem and any suggestions welcome.

I am running a laptop, 1.6Ghz AMd, 512ram, Via chipset & XP

Thanks.

What is you firewire card? Are files in AVI format?

The firewire is bulit in to the motherboard (VIA) and the files are captured via the V4 captur utility, so I gues they are, unless there is an option somere that I have not ticked.

Just out of interest I took the files over to the (via fire wire) to the home editing PC and V4 plays them out fine to the monitor.

This seems to lead to an issue with the laptop and getting stuff out, getting stuff in seems to be no problem, no loss of frames.

If I drag the files to an external Firewire drive, the monitor will work for the same project being played on the external drive.

But not on the internal drive, which I am sure when I purchased the machine about a year ago it worked in all directions.
