No New Script folders showing?

Grazie wrote on 5/18/2008, 1:28 AM
I have several scripts within folders within the main Script Folder. Previously I was able to access them through the Tools > Scripting > folders within VP8, and now I can't. The are there, and I can activate them use "Run Script . . " but not as a folder under Tools > Scripting.

Anybody else?

Grazie

Never had that problem but sorry if this is obvious, did you try the 'rescan script menu folder' to get them back?

Bob.

'rescan script menu folder' - yes I did, but always good to check with me!

Grazie, I have exactly the same problem and I have no idea why either. I just assumed it was yet another Vista 64 thing because they still show up on my older XP computer. What OS are you running?

(Yes I have rescanned my script folder.. quite a few times in fact)

Sorry .. no such problems here on VP 8.0b running on XP-SP2

I'm running XP-pro SP2, all updates in place as per November last.

My invitation to Bob and Tom is to "force" a new folder - "New Folder" - and see if that appears?

OK .. here ya go:-

1. Create new folder under 'Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 8.0\Script Menu'
2. Fire up VP, cannot see new folder
3. Close VP
4. Add script file to new folder
5. Fire up VP
6. Now I can see folder
7. Close VP
8. Delete script from new folder
9. Fire up VP
10. Cannot see folder

Seems to me you need a script or some content in the new folder before VP will show it on the menu. No need to rescan at all.

HTH,
Tom

How many scripts? Been lots of posts on this recently, but also several years ago. Vegas chokes when too many scripts are in script folder and its subfolders.

Ah! What's the "choke-quotient" John?

cough cough cough . ..

I have no idea. I just posted a link to my old findings in another thread. Here it is again:

Script icons disappear

As I pointed out in that other post a few days ago, Sony "fixed" this, but I think they just bumped up the number of scripts needed to cause the problem. I'm guessing between 64-128. I certainly have the problem, but I have more scripts than most ...
Grazie wrote on 5/18/2008, 11:35 PM
Thanks Tom. Maybe the "New Folder" script requirement is a false positive? And that the Choke-Quotient comes into play?

IT? Yah gotta luv IT!

OK, I'll start off today by rearranging scripts.

John: " . . but I think they just bumped up the number of scripts needed to cause the problem."

So, there you have it Tom!

Now, can I rearrange scripts into "several" folders? Or, is there a top-level number of folders PLUS scripts?

Yup, that did it. Flushed out masses of scripts I now rarely use and ALL my folders came back and the scripts too.

However, it would appear that Folders do nothing to allow EXTRA scripts. There would seem/appear to be a Folders+Scripts ceiling. Now, not that I much about IT, but back in the day and DOS, I could get around this by creating folders and sub-folders and stuffing files into them? However here, in VP8 folders and files are "counted" as same items? Is this correct? Of course this cold happen up to the amount of folders being used. But here, in VP8 I am only a speaking of 4 folders at most.

If my premise is correct, then surely VP8 isn't treating folders and files in Scripting as I would have thought the same under Windows?

Not only do I have my folders & Scripts back, I have them as options fr the toolbar too.

Don't know if this will help much but here we go :)

Windows and NTFS seems to permit some very large number of files in a folder and some hideous number of levels. However Vegas is clearly reading that into it's own data structures which are no doubt held in memory. There could be hard coded limits on just how much will fit. One thing that might help is keeping the folder names concise. I know it's elegant to have very descriptive names on things however I've come unstuck with some of my own code because of someone using very long folder names many levels deep.

How about what I have already?

* Lodsa Scripts 1

* Lodsa Scripts 2

* GB Favourites

Inelegant enough for you Bob? As to levels, just a folder deep - no more .. no less.

Grazie

ps: And no, I haven't got asterisks at the beginning of the naming of folders - that is only to bullet it here.

That definately shouldn't spin anything out.
