no pictures on some avi files

mrrod wrote on 2/1/2005, 12:30 AM
Hello, can someone help me out? i've clicked on an avi file and the summary view has given me the picture properties but no sound properties, so i tried a different avi file and this time no video properties, i am unable to add my avi files to my timeline as Vegas 5.0 can't read the avi file, the message i get is Video: Stream Attributes could not be determined.

Can anyone help me out with this problem?

AVI files are just a wrapper and can contain lots of things - it may be that Vegas doesn't have the correct codec to read what's in the files. Download a copy of Gspot and it will tell you whats in the files and whether your computer has a codec that can handle them.

i have gspot and i recently installed ace mega codec pack, gspot tells me i have the codec for the avi files and they all play in any player that i have installed. How do i add or even get Vegas to use the codecs i have installed? does vegas have a seperate folder for codecs to use?

you still have not told us what they are - so its hard for me to tell you how to use them ....

also --

codec packs = evil !!! do not EVER use

Ok...i've ininstalled ace mega codec pack . The file stats from gspot are:

Video Codec..: DivX 3 Low-Motion
Video Bitrate: 915 kb/s
Audio Codec..: 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
Audio Bitrate: 128 kb/s (64/ch, stereo) CBR
Frame Size...: 688x416 (1.65:1) [=43:26]

i assume this is the one where the audio works and the video doesnt ?

or the one where the video works but the audio doesnt ..

looking at it - i bet the former ...

im not sure what divx codecs you have installed , but try to change the FOURCC to Divx/Divx from divx3/divx3

I'll watch this thread and other like it with interest. I often have video files that play fine in several players that I might use but have no sound or video in VV5.

Usually the sound is ac3, what's wrong with the video -- dunno!

it would help greatly on all these "my video doesnt import" if you can upload a small chunk of a sample (1meg is all) ..

yousendit or youshareit work good for this ..

you can cut off a chunk using virtualdub in stream mode (n no re-compression) or winrar with no compression and split the file .. try not to use avi file splitters as they can alter the header ...

in fact winzip or winrar are the best and just split the file to leave it as much along ...

Hey B JM,

Although i'm able to use Vagas with my own video files i take using my camera i'm uploading this file for you to look at, if you'd be so kind.

http://s20.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3UWP5BN969VN4128ER5NF3JHC1 ( 1megfile before TMPGEnc)

http://s22.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=37E8EC4AN51MS0OUQDAOIKRK1G (1megfile after TMPGEnc)

I ran the 1megfile through TMPGEnc and changed the file extension from .avi to .mpg, draged it to vegas timeline and it played video and audio althugh the audio has the same codec as before i changed it,

BEFORE ANY CHANGE ( this file won't play sound, only video)
Name.........: home movie.avi
Filesize.....: 690 MB (or 706,849 KB or 723,813,948 bytes)
Runtime......: 01:32:12 (138,292 fr)
Video Codec..: DivX 3 Low-Motion
Video Bitrate: 915 kb/s
Audio Codec..: 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
Audio Bitrate: 128 kb/s (64/ch, stereo) CBR
Frame Size...: 688x416 (1.65:1) [=43:26]

AFTER CHANGE( this is taken from the above file and ran through TMPGEnc into .mpg)
Name.........: 1megfile.22.avi
Filesize.....: 1.16 MB (or 1,188 KB or 1,216,512 bytes)
Runtime......: 00:00:09 (222 fr)
Video Codec..: DivX 3 Low-Motion
Video Bitrate: 954 kb/s
Audio Codec..: 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
Audio Bitrate: 128 kb/s (64/ch, stereo) CBR
Frame Size...: 688x416 (1.65:1) [=43:26]

anyone know why this is?

I loaded both samples above into Vegas and they both play just fine ..

maybe the one that you have that doesnt play in vegas (no sound) has a corrupt header on the first frame
mrrod wrote on 2/2/2005, 11:21 PM
when i add the file with no sound i only get video in the timeline, usually when i add an avi/mpg i get an audio and video in the timeline seperatly. If the sample that doesn't play sound has a corrupt header how did you get to play the sound?

How do I change the FOURCC to Divx/Divx from divx3/divx3 ?

B_JM wrote on 2/3/2005, 7:23 AM
i get sound and video with both clips - but the one you said didnt have sound you cut out of a larger clip ... maybe the larger clip has the bad header ... nothing wrong with the sample you posted ..

to change FOURCC , use a FOURCC changer .. http://www.inmatrix.com/files/avic_download.shtml
mrrod wrote on 2/3/2005, 10:05 AM
I have that fourcc changer but i don't see divx in the list to change to, i do see mp41/mp42/mp43/div4, any of those any good?
B_JM wrote on 2/3/2005, 10:10 AM
use the one that comes with xvid instead - that other seems to be a bit outdated ....

i put it here
