No preview

Ulodesk wrote on 7/27/2013, 4:44 PM
The icon image shows on the clip but here's a lead for what the problem might be:
It was shot at 1920:1280 24p (24F on a Vixia HF-S200). I let that in project settings and matched to project with the check box below also checked.I even tried setting an interlacing (it shouldn't be, but I thought it was worth a try). I opened and closed the application several times. Nothing worked.

However, I opened another project (interlaced) that I had worked on recently, No problem. I brought a clip from the new project onto the timeline and the preview is fine.

I am among those who have had repeated problems with preview not showing. Anyone up for compiling a sticky posting that provides a thorough troubleshooting list of procedures?

I think your project file somehow got damaged, or there might be something in it corrupting the file again and again.
Sometimes it helps to do a CTRL-A (=select all), then copy and paste in a brand new, clean project file. If, however, there is something in it corrupting (eg a very large or damaged picture/clip), the project may get corrupt again. Hope this helps.

I have tried recreating projects to no avail. Just now I came home with footage captured today on another Vixia, 1920x1080, downloaded it to a folder and tried to play the clips in a new project in MS. No video preview in the preview window, although it plays fine in the trimmer window.

Can anyone help me with this, please?

There's a preview switch in the trimmer window. Click it.

I think MusicVid has the right idea. Right click on the trimmer, and select 'show video in preview window' . Unselect 'show video monitor'. You can also use the CTRL-P shortcut.

I'm sorry to be so dense on this little issue. I read your post, opened studio, and looked for a button; no luck.
I opened the project again, opened the docked trimmer window, and moved a clip into it. This time it also appears in the video preview window -- until I close the trimmer, at which point the video preview also disappears.

I right clicked in the Trimmer: Show video monitor is unchecked.

Boy, this is frustrating! I'll appreciate any further clarification you can offer. There are much more interesting issues in video editing...

Silly question -- your video will still show in the trimmer even if it's been muted on the timeline. Is that the case?
Markk655 wrote on 7/29/2013, 7:30 AM
Is this the default behaviour?

If the clip is in trimmer, you see it in the preview. If the trimmer is closed (no clip in trimmer), then you get no preview.

When the trimmer is closed, your preview should show what is in the timeline.

Is that what you are seeing?

Gents,
Thank you for your replies. In response:

"...your video will still show in the trimmer even if it's been muted on the timeline. Is that the case?"

Yes, with qualifications: If I have the trimmer undocked and clip showing in both trimmer and preview, the clip disappears from the video preview but remains in the trimmer. However, when I un-mute the track again, the image does not reappear in the preview.

"When the trimmer is closed, your preview should show what is in the timeline. Is that what you are seeing?"

No. When I drag a clip from the Project Media panel to the trimmer, it appears in both trimmer and preview, providing the two are not docked together, i.e., as tabs in the same window. When I close the trimmer, the clip disappears from the preview. Furthermore, if the clip is showing in both preview and an undocked or separately docked trimmer, when I dock the trimmer with (as tabs) the preview, the preview goes black and the clip remains visible only in the trimmer.

If you have not read the beginning of the thread, please do so, as I explain the problem from the outset.
Again, thanks for your responses.

The reason we're puzzled is because this is the first time this has been described without the trimmer/timeline controls being the culprit.
So you're going to have to maintain some patience while we help you to sort it out.

Post some clean screenshots of your workspace showing the problem, and we'll have a look.

Okay, thanks. I'll post screen shots after I get home tonight.

I have posted a document with a number of screenshots here:

Hope you can solve the mystery from here. Please let me know if you need other settings or other screenshots as well.
Markk655 wrote on 7/30/2013, 8:28 PM
Thanks for the screenshots. I did some testing. I sort of get what you see when I have the reverse of the options below. It looks like you have the settings correct based on the way the trimmer looks..Still, can you please re-confirm the following settings when your right click on the trimmer...

-show video window in preview CHECKED
- show video monitor UNCHECKED

It almost seems as thought the preview is looking for the feed from the trimmer even though the Timeline is active?

Apologies, I can't think of anything else right now. :(

Every screenshot shows the error.
It should literally jump off the screen to an experienced user.

Who else sees it?
A Colorado microbrew goes to the winner!
(Mark, look closer.)

If there was no other reason to more editing tonight, now there is.

Multiply (masks) are selected instead of alpha source. I had to blow up the pdf to see it. Have a look at the track headers. The compositing parameter is set to mask the tracks below. Hence, all you see is black when the trimmer is not open and the timeline is active.
musicvid10 wrote on 7/30/2013, 9:57 PM

Mark665,
You're a winner!

OP has source on one video track with Multiply mask. As any fifth grader will tell you,
1 x 0 = 0.

Musicvid,

Thanks for the extra push. You can put the microbrew in the mail (pack it well!)

Dang, I drank it.

Gentlemen, thank you very much. If you ever need help with Word, let me know. I know what to look for there, at least.

I had been previously using the compositing settings on a title project. I'm not quite sure how they stuck to this one, since I started new projects several times in teh process of trying to figure this out. Well, it's a learning curve, but I'll get there.

Thanks again. Probably won't be the last time I need Help 101.

Been with Word since Windows 3.1, but thanks.

Best advice for now is always start with a fresh project; save early, and save often.
