Does it preview with a clip on the timeline?
I just tried loading a clip into the trimmer only and, as soon as I clicked anywhere, it showed up (using 5.0b).
My only suggestion is to check your external monitor settings.

Mike, I didn't give much info in my original post.

It's Vegas 6b and yes I can see preview from the timeline. When I click around in the trim window I can see on the external monitor, its just when I hit the space bar (or use preview play in the explorer or media window) that I get a blackscreen, but the sound still plays... just no picture.

Sorry Jeff. I've got 6.0b but haven't gotten around to installing it yet so I can't help you out any further. Hopefully someobne else has an idea.

I'm having the same problem with version 6b, which is the latest update for accademic version. Anybody have a solution to this problem ? No preview from timeline, only from media pool.

"I'm having the same problem with version 6b, "

I had this in 6 with SteadyHand rendered clips, but it WAS corrected in 6b. This doesn't sound good.

" . . which is the latest update for academic version.

I didn't know there was a "version" break or that there was/is a difference in the updates available for an "academic" version? I would have thought that all versions were the same and that it was only the price breaks that were only the difference? Surely not? Interesting.

As you know the latest version IS V6d. Notwithstanding your comments regarding updates available for the academic version, I would have suggested that you investigate this to get your Preview back.

As I said I too had external Preview issues from trimmer, but that was only with SteadyHand rendered clips.

6.0d is working fine from time line and trimmer to TV via firewire

If you attempt to upgrade to version 6.0d, it will ask you for a full version product serial number, which is different than the accademic one.

I'm tyring to preview a timeline in the previe windows in vegas, just like you can preview media from the media pool in the preview window. I'm not trying to use an external device.

Thanks,

If you attempt to upgrade to version 6.0d, . . .

Now that I don't understand. I understand WHAT you are saying, but I don't understand the logic behind it.

As to Previewing, you did say you had the "same" problem, which was about External Previewing. So that's why I responded the way I did. However, this is even more perplexing.

Yes, this is definetely weird.

This is the first time I'm using sony vegas, and my assumption was that it is possible to play and view the timeline in the viewer.

So I ask is this possible ?

norbra

Anyone have an answer ?

If I understand what you're saying, your problem is not the same as jkrepner's. You just can't see preview in the preview window. Could it be that you vave the external preview button enabled? If so then Vegas would be trying to send the preview elsewhere. Seems too simple but it fit's with what you've described.

Rob? This was my thinking. I went to some lengths to establish this "nice" point and Norbra confirmed with:

"I'm tyring to preview a timeline in the previe windows in vegas, just like you can preview media from the media pool in the preview window. "

It took some time, but I think I was able to unravel the initial poster question from Norbra's . ..

. .. and yes, I too thought this, and until we get a definitive, this still remains perplexing. If the ExtMon button is "depressed" we aren't being told: LOL!
