For some reason when I try go to Pref-video device I can not seem to
hold the settings for external preview, so how do I retain these settings,
for now, Vegas 5 has no external video preview? Does the upgrade
5.0b help...sparrow happy Fall!
It could be you have resources stealing your 1394's resources. Are you also pressing the button on the video preview window for External? Is your external converter truly OHCI capable? Using a converter or camera to convert the signal?
There are many things that could go wrong here, more information might help provide a better answer.
Thanks for the early morning reply...I am using the Canopus ADVC-100,
and had no problem with external playback and Vegas VS. 5. When I try
to change and retain the settings in vedio device prefrence it does not hold but defaults to nothing? When I go back to the old version of Vegas the
settings hold. Do I need to do the upgrade to Vs 5.0b?
ARe you working with PAL? 5.0a does have some PAL issues. There is no reason to NOT upgrade to 5b, I'd do it anyway, as there are several small things fixed, and a few new features.
not working with pal, and I did do the install of Vegas 5.0b..
perhaps I need to re-install the upgrade? I am not having any
audio problems..
thanks again

All I can surmise at this point is that something else is robbing the external preview from the bus. In other words, your bios isn't allowing it to happen. It's definitely not a Vegas issue, this would have people screaming bloody hell if it were happening.
Does your 1394 converter device shut off after a period of time?
If you are running XP, there is a 1394 update from Microsoft that fixes many problems. It does, however, slightly reduce the transfer speed of any Firewire disks (not enough to affect video capture, however).
Here is a link to a thread where this is discussed. There are other links in that thread, including a direct link to the download. You can un-install the patch if you don't like it.
Thanks again for the feedback. I spoke with a couple of Chicago Vegas
engineers and they think that the Vegas 5.0b upgrade might have caused
some problems..they suggest that I do an install of Vegas on top of 5.0b
and see if this corrects the issues. For example when I set the program
to not open the last job on start up, it defaults to open the last job on start
up. I need to finish a couple of large jobs (at least the audio is working!),
and try this (I guess). I did leave the old Vegas 4 on, this might be causing some problems?

Leaving 4.0 *shouldn't* have anything to do with this. I've got a machine still running all previous versions of Vegas including Vegas Pro. (1.0)
A repair or full install might turn the trick, and you've got nothing to lose.
I am still having problems with the external monitor. At the suggestion of
Sony I took off Vegas 5 and the upgrade 5.0b. We loaded 5.0b and at least
in Video Devices we can check the correct setting, and we can also hold
pre-sets in the general setting. When I select external monitor, it holds, but
now the image on the TV flickers on and off every 7 seconds. There are
no new upgrades on the Canopus site, and the XP device mgr says that
the hardware and drivers are happy? Any ideas. Also the same problem
exists with Vegas 4 and Sound Forge 7!

Although I haven't been "screaming bloody murder" regarding this issue, asked either this forum or the DMN forum - maybe both- about this very problem months ago and basically got back the same replies as can be seen in this thread. I'm on Windows 2000 (Pro), so I don't think updated XP drivers are applicable to me, and the problem has run across all versions of 5.x since I installed AND re-installed it. This IS an issue, and I'd love to see it addressed.
I'll wager you don't have a true OHCI card, or your card is sharing resources. That's about the ONLY thing, save a bad card or conversion device, that can keep this from working.
You are the first person who has had the same problem with Vegas 5.0b.
My friend in Nashville, Bill, is using Windows 2000 and loaded the demo
Of Vegas 5.0b, using the canopus for playback and all worked?
I will try to load Vegas 3 (it worked fine) and see if it works, cause my system has not changed, Vegas has! Thanks for the feedback..

And your idea to take off the old Versions of Vegas 5 and 5.0B, I got
myexternal monitor back...
Just wanted to say thanks.
Note,
With the install of Vegas 5.0B, I have lost the my buss section to our Motu system, I will check the Motu site to see if they have an update,
I still have the buss section with Versions of Vegas 3 and 4..

ps I will also post this on your site, under problems with external monitors!
